Old man

Hi everybody,

This is my first time posting in Zbrush Central and this is also my first project in Zbrush. I started learning Zbrush from Gnomon’s DVDs about a month ago. This project took about 2 weeks to complete. It was kind of hard getting around Zbrush at first and I messed up on a few steps along the way, but thankfully I finished the model ok.

Here is a little about the project. I did the base mesh in Maya. Then I sculpted, detailed, and textured in zbrush. I was going to render it in Maya with Mental Ray, but it seems I messed up on the bump map procedure. Therefore, I wasn’t able to export everything accordingly. So I have to watch out for that in the next project. Finally, I just used Zbrush’s rendering system.

I hope you like it and I would love to hear your comments and suggestions. Thanks for looking!

Very good first work! Congrats and keep z-brushing:D

Fabric looks like fabric, leather looks like leather, and skin looks like skin… Very good job, specially for your first zbrush project!!! :+1: Great work man keep it up.

looks very good, i’d put some stripes on the clothes to make his face pop

…first try!

Thanks everyone for your comments! I will improve on the cloth as you mentioned Warpy.

Here is a render of the head without texture and materials.

Hard to say why, but I actually like the untextured model better. maybe its the eyes and the shader that makes it look a bit waxmodel like.
BUT!!! I still think its some very nice modeling.

I think the color texturing could be made much more intense. Its like its one color, and where are the liverspots? Old people are going to have non uniform color skin, lots of variation in the colors.

Thanks Jais for your comments!
As for womball’s suggestion, I think the hat has hidden most of the larger and more visible liverspots. I studied quite a few old people’s photographs before began to paint the skin texture. I noticed a lot of the liverspots are located around the temple area. I have included another render of the character without the hat, and a closer shot of him. I think in this image the color of the skin isn’t as uniform. I actually used many shades of colors layerd on top of each other when I painted his skin. Please take a look and let me know if this one better justify him as an old man. Please let me know any further suggestions to improve on my work. Thanks a lot!

Very cool sculpting.

What is that behind his hat?

The only thing I have to mention is the skin-shader, maybe something SSS would be good, or if you want to fake it use the Color-burn tool in PS to make the skin look more translucent.

Cheers “ko’gen”.

That is a class bit of texturing! Wonderful flow and variety to the skin … the subtle tones are what really make this ‘pop’. I’m thinking of the slight reddening on the very edges of the eyelids, the way the lips merge into the surrounding skin, the very believable variation on his ears. Not to mention the wonderful work on his pores and wrinkles. Absolutely deserves 5-stars. Get some eyes in there and you’ve got a Top Row piece. :+1:

Kogen: Cool suggestion on faking the sss in PS. I’ll have to try that. The two bar looking things behind his hat are just part of the costume. Some acient Asian hats have them.

Moochie: Thanks for your comments! I used to paint flat skins in PS matching to the UV layouts. It really is a blessing to be able to paint on a 3D object directly and with such precision within Zbrush. I enjoyed it very much!
