irerbert, the shader is Fast skin with SSS of MR. and i use some maps to control the parameters. im using zb about one year.

You have some really awesome work there, and when people do very realistic characters like this I always take a good look at how they did the different layers that go into the various SSS map slots, (I’m a Max user.) But I feel like I need to understand the reasons behind the different colors in the various skin levels. Why more specular weight on the tip of the nose than on the bridge? Why is the subdermal layer redder on the point of the chin than under the corners of the mouth? I just feel like having a more intellecual understanding of the color variations on the face would help me a lot. Could you point me to a discussion of these features or tell me something about what led you to create your maps in the way you did?
Stunning work, would you mind sharing your lighting setup? I use Max too and lighting is something I’m working on so I’m always curious as to what others do.

Wildsketch, Atwooki - this is the first finished character i have do, using sss fast skin of mental Ray. so i simply paint my maps based on the online help of 3dsmax… and after paint a basic colors i was try a lot of combination of this maps, the most credible i show for you in the imgs posted… im not sure if this is the best painted maps, and i will continue tryng others colors…

x-titan, the lighting is very simple,one mr spot area light to key light, and one Mr omni area light to back light, the secret is put a high value on the area shadows to get a very softnes shadows. so i created a sphere to enviroment and turn off the visible to camera, so i can get the alpha of the guy, and turn on final gather. one pass of ambient occlusion and other with the zdeph information… the rest is photoshop post production…
