Trying to draw with a mousepad on a laptop is grim! Any suggestions on a usb graphics tablet? I think A5 would be OK, but I am open to all advice.

WACOM without a doubt.
I brought a super-cheap Apitek A5 graphics tablet about 4 years ago for about $35 from a store. The only problem it’s given me is that it didn’t come with drivers for Windows NT. I used a big Wacom at work, but didn’t really notice that much differance. I brought a trackball recently and I really regret it! I’ll go back to using a mouse.
What are the specs for your Laptop?? (just curious)
I just got a Wacom Intuos 6x8 tablet a week or two ago, and I don’t think I’ll ever want to draw with a mouse again. 
It’s GREAT for use with Zbrush, Photoshop, Painter, Xara, or ANY graphics program. There are features in many programs to take advantage of the capabilities of a good drawing tablet, things you couldn’t possibly do with just a mouse. Things like pressure sensitivity, ANGLE of the pen relative to the board, and the list goes on. And once you get used to it, your productivity will increase as well.
Shop around before you buy. Then check out Wacom Direct. I bought a refurbished 6x8 Intuos that I don’t think was ever used before I got it, it was PERFECT, with a new box and all the software.
I just don’t know why I waited so long to buy one. :o

I did the BMW robot image with a graphic tablet (a tiny Wacom graphire). I haven`t used it much with ZBrush but having spent time getting used to it it becomes second nature.
I have an 8x6 WACOM arriving (a present form a good friend) today so I will let you know how it performs.
I’d like to get one, but even the refurbished ones are little steep for my budget.

Very recently I was lucky enough to come across an old Wacom " artIIz " tablet from a good buddy of mine who’s cutting it loose for dirt cheap - it’s the first time I’ve ever had a chance to use a tab with any graphics at all… The manual says it came out in 1995 - but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I can go back to using a mouse with any of the graphic proggies I run now. Seeing ZBrush render live with active pressure sensitivity absolutely blew me through the roof… I have to wear a bib now whenever I use it 
Seriously tho - I haven’t even begun to scope or price the new Wacom tabs as the billfold’s gone anorexic on me - but I do know I’ll be headed to their site first when the time comes to start shopping for sharply modern goods. From there I’ll have a look at what other tabs exist as well
