OBJ model with ZBrush symmetry issues

Hi. I’m pretty new to Zbrush and modeling in general, so this is probably a rookie issue on my part, but I’m having a problem with symmetry working correctly on my imported obj file.

When I sculpt on one side of the model I’m not getting the same effect on the other. The problem seems to be pressure related. If I try to sculpt delicately I get nothing on the opposite side, but if I apply significant pressure on my WACOM tablet (which isn’t the effect I’m going for) I start to get shapes happening on the opposing side. Has anybody ever dealt with this before? (See attached file for example.)

One thing I’ve noticed about my model is that though I welded the seem of the model in 3DS, once I start bumping up the geometry in ZBrush, a few gaps have produced themselves along the original seem. Could that be causing the symmetry problem I’m having? Any thoughts on how I can fix that problem too?

Any experienced insight is MUCH appreciated!

If gaps are opening up, then the seam isn’t welded after all.

Regarding the problem that with symmetry, I suspect that the model’s axis is slightly off center. Pressing the Transform>S.Pivot button might succeed in overcoming this.

Yeah. I understand the seems aren’t actually welded at this point, and will fix this when I get back to the machine that has MAX, but do you think the seem issue is what caused the symmetry problem?

Thanks again!

Sorry Aurick, I overlooked you comment about the symmetry in your last post. I’ll try the S>Pivot button when I get back to my machine. (I’ve got ZBrush on my Mac at home and do my MAX work in a lab at school. NOT ideal.)

As far as the welded seam goes, and exporting OBJ files, this has been a good lesson for me as a newbie overall…

Thanks again for the help!
