Not seeing all of my alphas

I downloaded all the alphas from the download center, placed them in the startup/alphas folder, and I don’t see them. There should be over 500 but I currently have a little of a 100.

Where are should I place them to be able to see them at startup? Are there too many of them?

Hey there,

yes there are by FAR too many of them. Instead you should should access them through Lightbox if you have 3.5 R3. Just cut and paste all the alphas into your ZB installation folder/ZAlphas. Like that you only have to open Lightbox and click on Alphas in order to see all your alphas.

Hope that helps.

I see, thank you.
So is there a set default in Zbrush that organizes alphas, materials, textures, and brushes to where a certain amount are visible on the main menu, and if there are too many, the overflow is automatically placed in another folder?

Nope … there is no such feature.

In general i wouldn’t put too many alphas or materials in the startup folders, as it will slow down ZB noticeably. That’s why Pixologic came up with Lightbox.

The ZStartup folders for Materials, Textures and Alphas should only have 25 items maximum in each.

As has been said, everything else should go into your ZBrush 3.5 R3\ZMaterials, ZTextures or ZAlphas folder. Everything in those folders will be visible in Light Box with great thumbnails. You can then instantly load them to where you need them just by double-clicking. ZBrush will automatically put the item in the appropriate palette.

You can even put Windows shortcuts or sub folders into your ZFolders and Light Box will display those as folders. Selecting the folder will open the contents of that folder in Light Box, whether it’s a subfolder in the ZFolder or a shortcut to somewhere else on your machine or network. This lets you easily organize all of your resources.

Awesome, thanks for that input.
I didn’t think of the file shortcuts, that is a great concept.
