Normal Maps....Need some help please :)

Hi I am new here and still a beginner at Zbrush. I created a game character model that I have been trying to sculpt for weeks. But evertime I try to produce a normal map, it doesn’t seem to generate all the infomration like the smoother shading around the face, next and folds etc. It only seems to generate only minor details, like under the nose, creases of face etc. So I opened my normal and see that most of it is completely plain blue and only very few details can be seen on them. I though this was very awkward and thsi was why even after I applied a normal map my models still look boxy with soften edges ( i am using maya 8.5 )

I thought there was something wrong wiht my pology so i always went back to fix it However I never get that smooth look I sculpted in zbrush and the shadign still looks the same as the low poly even with a normal map on.

So I even tried reinstalling my zbrush and its still the same. I added some attachments first showing the normal map it produced ( u can see alot of plan blue ), the low poly without normal, the low poly with normal and the high poly which i exported to work on.

Anyone got any ideas how to sort my zmapper out or if there is something I did wrong? :frowning: I would really appreciate the help as this is making me very frustrated right now :S

( Oh yeah the default normal map making from the tools box always produces a plain blue normal map with nothing on O_O )

Happy new year :slight_smile:

hmm yes i know about this program o.o;

but id like to be able to do send what I have sculpted from zbrtush itself ( that also includes the character’s body details etc )

i cannot export them cos they are millions of polys :frowning:

EDIT :

here is the high res that i sculpted as u can see the normal map looks nothing like it should . the low poly still looks the same other than some areas like the eyebrows, all the other shading still looked the same

Export your head as an obj. Xnormal can handle even very high poly objs.

hehe i just tried what u said but the normal map still looks too plain and the lp mesh looks exactly as it was earlier :frowning:

oh wellc ould it be something wrong with my computer i wonder. I reinstalled zbrush many times now :frowning:

What are the steps that you’re using to create the normal map? Which version of ZBrush are you using?
