normal maps in 3ds max 2010

No problem at all - that little switch is about 6 months of pain… and I’ve not seen it posted anywhere else on this forum and I was just about to stop using Normals in Max when I thought of this.

I wonder why they default to some other value.

Technically we are all working in the wrong colour space if all Gamma settings are set to 1 in Max. You will get a better - more accurate render if you set everything to 2.2 - but it does cause issues when bringing other images in and out of Max. As we’ve found… as we are not sure what colour/gamma space ZBrush is working in. Non-Linear & Linear colour space is a good read in itself.
Maybe that’s a post in itself I may put up so find out a little more.

Again glad to have helped when I’ve received so much help from others on this forum.

Hi,

I am of course aware that I am outing myself as a newbie, and that I am probably hijacking this thread, but… can I find the correct normal map settings for both ZBrush 3.5 r3 and max 2010 anywhere? I have trial’ed and error’ed for a while now, and its really frustrating that I am not getting anywhere.

All the tutorials that I find in google are for Zbrush 3.1, that does not help very much. And having purchased Zbrush only recently I do not have the option to go back to 3.1.

Maybe I am just too dumb to find a fitting tutorial.

Regards,

Just as a hint to people having similar problems:

My problem seems to be have been ZBrush export related. eFlipZ and eFlipX as well as FlipNormal was enabled in the import / export options. Turning all of that off brought better results. I would have to investigate further as to which one of these three options was causing the problem, but I have other things on my plate currently.
