Normal Maps Across Multiple Subtools???

Hi is there a way to create normal maps across multiple subtools??? The model size is too large to export and import to max. I keep getting errors stating that I have too little memory. I have 2GB.

Any ideas???

You can create a separate normal map for each SubTool. Just select the SubTool and run ZMapper.

To make a single normal map for the whole model you would actually need to do the UV mapping before you split the model into SubTools. Or you could re-UV each SubTool being careful to keep the UV’s from overlapping in the process. Either way, after using ZMapper to create the normal maps for each SubTool, you would be able to combine them in Photoshop.

What I am trying to do is make a high poly model and then create a seperate low poly model and create a normal map that way. But my high poly model uses extracted elements for hair and accessories.

I can’t group them at the highest level because that’ll be too many polygons to bring into ZMapper. It is also too many to bring into Max :\

Any help would be great.

Thanks for your comment though, I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

What you would need to do is go to level 1 for each SubTool, then export them from ZBrush. In another app, remap those models. As you create the mapping, be careful to keep the UV’s from overlapping when the model is considered as a whole. In other words, each of these separate models should be given a different part of the 0,0 to 1,1 UV space.

After each model has been remapped, export them individually from your other app. It is very important that the point order of the models never change while you’re working with them like this! Otherwise, the model will explode in ZBrush.

Back in ZBrush, select a subtool and make sure you’re still at level 1. Now press Tool>Import and load the newly UV’d version of the model. Then you can create the normal map for this part. Repeat for all other subtools, then combine the separate maps in Photoshop.

Hmm, maybe I have misspoke. I’m being unclear I guess. What I want to do is use a create a character but work by creating the high poly mesh first then create a separate low poly mesh and use the high poly to generate the normal map for the low poly. The problem is the high poly has multiple subtools. Without exporting to another app, can I somehow create a normal map across all the subtools as if it was one single mesh?

Again, thanks for the help :+1:
