Normal Map render in 3DS Max 9 doesn't look right

Hi there. The first picture shows something that I’ve been working on:

When I use ZMapper to render out a normal map and render it in 3DS Max 9 though, the edge appears to bulge out, as shown here:

I’m rather baffled about this. Any ideas as to what might be causing the bulging?

Nevermind, I think I’ve been trying to pull off with a normal map. what a displacement map would be better suited for instead.
