Noob question about size

Hi all,

I did not see a noobie subforum so hopefully this is a good place to post…

I have just started using zbrush and have been watching a bunch of tutorial videos. I have noticed something that I don’t understand and would like to clarify.

  1. When I use the default tool to create a sphere it is a certain amount of polys, lets say 100000, if I create another sphere using the same subtool but its a larger sphere will the poly count of the 2nd sphere be larger then the first one?

  2. Am I correct in thinking that… if I scale the sphere (100k polys) up or down the poly count will not change?

  3. Is it true that…the draw size tool only ranges from 1 to 100 (I think) and has no relation to the amount of polys affected? Meaning if I was watching a tutorial of someone making an eyeball and they are using a draw size of 10 to paint it. Then when I attempted it myself I had to use a draw size of 30 to cover the same amount of space then I must conclude that my sphere is scaled up compare to his.

When creating a Zbrush primitive, the initial resolution (polycount) can be adjusted in Tool> Initialize prior to converting it to a polymesh 3d object.

Otherwise the only thing that changes mesh resolution is subdividing it or using one of Zbrush’s various remeshing or topology editing functions. Brush size generally has no bearing on mesh resolution, though certain functions in the program are context sensitive to brush size. Brush radius only increases the amount of points that fall under its influence.

Scaling functions enlarge the selected geometry, but don’t change it. It makes polygons larger, but doesn’t add more of them.

In other words:

  1. No.

  2. Yes.

  3. Brush size ranges from 1 to 1000, and the amount of polygons that a given brush affects depends on its radius, mesh density, size of the object, and depending on the Dynamic setting, how zoomed in you are.
