Noise problem and normal map question

Hi guys,

when I apply large scale noise to a mesh, this happens

the noise applies well, but the mesh inflates like a balloon. Why does this happen and how do I fix it? I just want the noise to dig into the mesh, not make it grow.

My other question is,

Did they actually take away the possibility to view normal maps in zbrush4? why would they do that? (if not, how am I supposed to view a normal map on my low poly mesh?)

Thank you very much for your time!

I don’t think you’ve been able to preview normal maps since the last four to five versions (3.5ish)

Personally I’d use another program to preview the normal map, preferably the program that is going to be used to render the result. There might not be a point in previewing it in anything else if the tangent basis might be different.

Hi Cryrid, thanks a lot for responding =)

Do you have any idea about what I was asking about the noise?
I want to use the noise to make some architecture look destroyed. I want zbrush to only dig into the mesh, rather than also make it inflate out. Because when the noise is large scale like I want it, the mesh balloons out, loosing all form (even if the strength is set to -0.0001).
any help would be gratefully appreciated. thanks ^^
