No texture visible

I am fairly new to Zbrush. Whatever I do, I can not see any textures on my model (tool). The material icon works fine, all changes are immediately reflected on my model, but when clicking the texture icon and selecting any of the available textures, nothing happens (apart from the icon changing to the new texture).

Must be some kind of overall setting that i did wrong. Can anybody help?

Thanks a lot. And by the way, it’s a fabulous piece of software.

Are you using the MacOSX version? If so, you will need to click the thumbnail in the Tool>Texture Map submenu to apply the texture. Also, make sure you’ve assigned UVs so that your texture displays correctly.

Thanks Marcus, for the speedy answer (and on a Sunday, great!!). Indeed, selecting the texture from the Tool submenu does the trick. I just wonder why selecting it directly from the texture icon does not work? What is the use of that icon then?

I do not understand your advice on the UV-assignment, but I will study the tutorials on that. I don’t want to steal your time every time.

Thanks again for your help.

Piet,

There are other uses for textures besides applying them to models. For example, you might want to use a texture with one of the sculpting brushes when polypainting your model. The reason you have to select the texture in the Tool>Texture Map submenu is because different textures can be applied to different subtools.

UVs are required to accurately map your texture (2D) to your model (3D). There are various ways of going about UV mapping and it’s a good idea to read about them in the docs.

Marcus,

Thanks for your additions, I think it is great that a guru like yourself still takes the time to answer newbees like me.

The book from Erik Keller that I am reading says (p.162) says that all subtools share the same texture and may only differ in color. Does that relate to an earlier version of Zbrush?

Piet

Piet,

Yes, that’s right. The MacOSX version has texture-per-subtool. You can check out the differences in the 3.12 documentation available here:

(This is still largely relevant to ZBrush 3.2.)
