Nick Carters Sketchbook

Hey everyone!

My name is Nick, I live in Melbourne and have just completed my Advanced Diploma of Professional Games Development (Specialising in Art). Throughout the course of my Diploma I discovered my passion and what I would like to do as a career, and that is character concepting and creation. We did a lot of assignments in my course aimed at giving you a broad understanding of the game creation pipeline, but it is creating characters where my heart lies and so that is what I am going to do

So I am creating a Sketchbook and dedicating myself to it from this point on.

In this sketchbook will be a mixture of sculpting in zbrush and life drawing. Every sculpt I do in zbrush I will record as a means of documenting my progression

So to begin with I thought I might link to my current portfolio (which I hope to completely replace by the end of the year). Looking forward to the year ahead.

Happy Zbrushing

So lately I have been doing more life drawing, waiting on a new computer build and zbrush just hates working on my laptop . Once the new computer is finished I am going to start a daily ritual of doing a life drawing study followed by a life sculpt study of the same subject, then post it here  I am hoping this will improve my anatomy knowledge.

Here are some of my life drawings:

Finally got around to doing some more stuff, feels good after a break. Started a head based on Scott Spencers sculpting method…

First pass of the skull

Second pass

first pass of the face, i realised that i didnt like this method. i get too distracted going from the skull to the face muscles. but it was a good excercise, i didnt take it further

Did some quick 30min life sculpting based on pictures found on pixel lovely.

started with a zsphere base

then roughed out the shape and sculpted a bit

learnt a lot from this and took it forward to my next one

i learn a lot from these

Just a quick bust i sculpted from a generic head. Need to learn how to do finer details better

was relatively happy with this so i decided to take my first foray into a portrait. this is of a famous person (i wont mention them). I will take this through to a final sculpt, looks okay so far but not really recognisable, hopefully hair and ears will help

Taken this bust as far as i want to. will do another in the future… possibly of the same person to gauge my progress. had a lot of fun doing it

Started another bust, calling it the viper…just started blocking out general anatomy at the moment. Gonna make it more interesting tomorrow.

Finished sculpting the viper bust, ended up taking it in a different direction… relatively happy with the result. onto the next…ended up having a tech issue, too low res in the face… will try to avoid this on the next one

Just a quick hard surface test and sculpt before bed
