Newbie question! How do you make a round base?

Hello everybody! Thanks for taking a look at my newbie question. I just bought Zbrush. Never used it before. I was wondering what is the easiest way to make a round base for a statue? What tool should I start with?

Thanks!

I would say use the cylinder subtool, click and drag it onto the canvas, press the “T” key to go into edit mode and then use the initialize tab and deformations tab to make it the size and shape you want to start with, then click “Make polymesh 3D”.

That being said depending on your settings it may not be sculpt friendly so you may want to use the “Unified Skin” option to make a nicer version of the mesh the initialize command will make.

EDIT: Let me know if what I stated above is confusing. If it is I’ll see if I can make a video when I get home.

I totally understand what you said. Thanks! I have one more question. When I scale a tool it starts to get distorted the smaller it gets. Is there any way to constrain the tool?

Thanks again!

No problem  As for the scale tool I’m not sure what you mean, can you post a screen shot?

If you mean the tool gets distorted the smaller it gets it sounds like you may be scaling by dragging the wrong circle. I think you have to scale by the middle inner circle (I don’t have ZBrush at work so I can’t check yet).

You can use the Deformation panel to scale, there are buttons to enable/disable the various axis too!

I’m sorry I’m not in front of my computer right now to post a screen shot but let me see if I can explain myself better. I have a tool of a half skull. I also have a tool of a flat base for a standing figurine. I want to evenly surround the base with a lot of skulls. When I insert the skull as a subtool with the base it is more than double the size of the base so I start scaling it down. The more I start scaling down the more I see little spikes of clay start coming out of the skull?

I will try to take a screen shot later on tonight. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks I will try that out as soon as I have a chance! Thank you!

You might have a mask active on the skull. Whatever is masked will not scale down. Go to Tool:Masking and click Clear, or ‘Ctrl+drag’ on the canvas.

I will try that also! Thank you!
