Newbie question about alphas

I’m very much a newbie to ZBrush but have experience in 3DS Max. I’m going through the ZClassroom videos to help get me started and I’ve come across something that really has me stumped.

In the video about Masking it says to paint a mask on a model you can choose the DragRect stroke and an Alpha mask and then hold the Ctrl key to create a mask of that alpha. I’m using ZBrush 4 r2 and whenever I hold down the Ctrl key it automatically changes my brush to Mask Pen and my stroke to Freehand as well as turning off Alpha.

I don’t see how I can create a mask in the shape of an alpha. What am I missing?

when you change your alpha and stroke type, hold down ctrl so you’re changing the brush settings for your mask.

Hold the control key down while choosing the drag rect stroke type and while choosing the brush alpha. These wile then become the settings for the masking brush.

Thanks guys, it’s so obvious once you know how

I just finished the ZSpheres videos. Too much fun! I can’t see using 3DS Max much anymore now.
