Newbie problem with creating polygroups

I’m following along with Martin Krol’s tutorial “Characters Made Easy”. In the polygroup section he shows us how to use Ctrl+Shft to select & hide groups and then use Group Visible to create our groups as we want them. Seems simple enough except I seem to be stuck in symmetry mode somehow. I’ve clicked x to turn symmetry off but I am still unable to select the right lower leg without also selecting the left lower leg. I need to be able to group the right side separately from the left. What am I doing wrong?

Are these areas the same color? If they are then they belong to the same group which explains them appearing together.

With only the two pieces visible try selecting Tools>Polygroups>AutoGroup and they will separate into individual polygroups. From there you should be able to select just one side.

Thank you so much! I had tried Auto Groups before but I did it with the whole model visible and it made the whole model one big group. But doing it with only two pieces selected worked just fine.

I guess this is happening because I created the model in ZSpheres with symmetry turned on? Every piece that was created together, left upper leg & right upper leg, for example, are poly-grouped together. Krol didn’t cover this in his tutorial but that’s fine, now I know how to fix it

Thanks again for your help, I was totally stuck!
