Newbie extract question

Hello all.

I’ve been following a tutorial on how to make a gas mask. This is the first time i have attempted anything in ZBrush so it is entirely conceivable that I will need to go back to the beginning. The gas mask is made from ZSpheres and has been re-meshed several times. I have painted polygroups on to it and then hidden the groups that I don’t want in the extraction. When I extract (edge Smoothness at 0, Surface Smoothness 0 and Thickness -0.1 - though i have attempted different combinations here) I get a really nasty and unexpected result. See before and after images.

Like I said - it is entirely possible that I will have to start again, but If I could understand what I have done wrong that would make me more confident when attempting it again.

I’m finding Zbrush has a steep learning curve!

Anyway many thanks in advance for any help/ advice given

I don’t know if I have a great answer for you, but it almost looks like it would be easier to retopologize the mask by appending a z sphere to your head than trying to mess with extraction. I have had the best luck using either no thickness (set to 0), or using a smaller deviation from 0 ( -.01 or .01). -.1 or higher has never resulted in a workable mesh for me. The edge smooth can probably be turned up a slight notch to reduce that jumbled mess at the edges, but with a high poly count, it might not help.

Holding shift and clicking “uncrease” might allow you to smooth some of those edges, but I really think retopology might be faster, just use the Append method rather than the Rigging method.

thanks for your help. I’m new to Zbrush so i’m not entirely sure about retopolgy just yet. However, i’ve got some videos on that so i’ll go away and watch them and see how I can apply it here.

Cheers,
Mark
