Newb confused by stretched textures

Hi, I’m trying to use zBrush to paint on 3d models imported from another app (c4d). The models are hard surface (spaceship type stuff) and I can’t seem to polypaint onto them without stretching and ugliness. Even if I bump up the subD’s to a million, or even 3, I get stretching and distortions in the paint. The stretching totally matches the shapes of the polys, so I assume that is the problem. The models I am using are not super-cleanly made, but they are not terrible either (i think).

Is there no poly independent way to paint in zBrush?

It’s probably a weak answer but you could try it.

You could try to make a unified skin out of your model. That way you will be able to paint cleanly on any side of the object. When your finished you should be able to export the Polypaint to Texture an use that texture on your original model(but I actually do not know how since polygons are totally different).

Otherwise you need to go even higher with the subdivisions or eventually with Geometry HD.
