If I may say so myself, I quite agree with everything said by Derek. Not that that really helps, but I can also say that it seems you’ve taken a bit of his criticism and applied it to your work, which I commend you for. Looks like you’ve tweaked the dragon and lion to a bit more natural (and somewhat more compelling) of a pose. Personally, I would love to see some more sculptural texturing to compliment the polypaint texturing. :+1:

Skadalilama…Playing like a child with toys is something that I value, and is a most valuble asset, in my way of thinking anyway.
I don’t think that there are any words or opinions that will ever be able to devalue my feelings about that aspect of my creating…try as hard as they may to vanish it, the child in me will stay, and continue to play…Thank You…

I keep coming back to this thread. I love all the controversy. I love all the comments from people who can’t think outside the box. This forum is full of robots. Bunch of t pose game model crap. 95% of these threads look exactly the same. When someone comes along and upsets the apple cart… whooooooa boy. Most of the advice people are giving to SD would steer him in the direction everyone else is going. Create a perfectly rendered low poly symmetrical character in a nice tidy environment with perfect perspective blah blah blah. Seriously even if I’m not in love with what this guy is doing… at least he’s creating something different and he’s sticking to his guns. He’s more of a real ‘fine artist’ than most people in here. 5 stars just for being eccentric.

Not sure why much of your last reply was spoken in the third person, SpiritDreamer.
It reminded me of that Jimmy character from an old Seinfeld episode.
As was already said, you can take any advice you get here, or you can just leave it.
It’s obvious that you’re going to continue to do it your way regardless of any criticism you get, constructive, or otherwise. And, that’s completely fine. If it makes you happy - stick with it.
Personally, I always grew as an artist when I received constructive criticism.
In fact, the teacher who taught me the most, a guy who you might even know, was this guy that used to tear down my work like no one else. He was absolutely brutal! He minced no words. He let me have it with both barrels.
It didn’t bother me too much, because I knew he saw potential in me, and was trying to help me become a better artist. Which I did.
Now, I’m not going to waste your time with another critique of your work, but, since you do appreciate a little controversy, I thought I would make a counterpoint on a couple comments you just made.
First, it’s very easy to say that anyone who doesn’t get my work “can’t think out of the box,” or, “they just don’t get me”, rather than accept any criticism.
Also, many people love to say that they are a fine artist, and that somehow makes them superior to those who draw comics, make video game art, or do graphic design for advertisements. Really, anybody can say they’re a "fine artist." At my job, I see people who say they are fine artists all the time. Some are quite good. Most, however, I would say their work is at a junior high school level. No technique. Poor composition. Poor use of color. Muddy paint. Just plain awful. Not everyone can be a Michelangelo, or a Da Vinci. That’s why their work stands out. Not to say that other people can’t enjoy making art even if they are the only ones who appreciate it.
By the same token, I don’t think work that is appreciated by a broader audience is somehow diminished just because of that fact.

Webhead…I take what advise and suggestions I think will hep me to get the results I desire, and desregard the rest,… just as you probably do…So not even sure what controversy your talking about.
If expessing thoughts is a controversy, then I guess i’m guilty as charged, but I never thought of it as wrong, or a crime.
What I posted was what I thought to be relevent to what I was told about my work by the last two people posting and agreeing with each other…I just agreed with what I posted more.
I am just trying to do what is in your Ralph Waldo Emerson saying at the bottom of your post…Create your own path and don’t be a follower.
About being a fine artist…not my words.
Hope you don’t find what I have said offensive…not intended to be so…
People make too much out of nothing, I guess that they have nothing better to do. I just wish that they would do it on someone elses thread, and not on mine…

I was reffering to what you said in a previous post…

Maybe I misunderstood because it was said in the third person. What was it were you trying to say here?

Nope. I’m not offended. I’m just another person expressing himself like you.

Webhead…Those words, all of them, except for the very last ones, were said by another forum member named Ehren, and posted in my thread two or three pages back in this sketchbook. I put his name at the end of the statement that he made,…I guess you missed it…
Anyway, glad you are not offended,…neither am I…and Thanks for stopping by, by the way…

Oh, that explains why it was in the third person. LOL I usually put quotation marks when I quote another person to avoid confusion. Carry on.

Will Do…

big improvement, nice color and depth
sweet texturing on the animals and figures, great poses i see the advice is greatly adding,
great composition and dancing the viewers eye, the only critique would be
to plan your parts ahead of time by individually lighting the clusters of figures and foregrounds that will further enhance what the focal points of the piece are.
great job, your work has accelerated beyond my expectations already, you continue to inspire me, thats why im staying in art school and not going to a special animation school,

we can still learn so much from the past such as the masters, even though the entertainment spectacles of today lack a certain content it still invigorates us all to ascend beyond our normal barriers

Teddy 007 Kong…Thank You  The goal of my experiance with 3d has always been to enhance my 2d work, and nothing more…I figured that if I created a ton of compositions using my 3d characters, that some would work and some would not, but at least I would have plenty to choose from, and to turn into 2d paintings, which is what i’m just now starting to do.
Painting, and studying the works of the Old Masters is my passion, and always has been,…So i’m glad to hear that you are staying in Art School.:+1: .Always follow your passion, and you will end up with a feeling that money can’t buy…
Thanks for the kind words and thoughts Teddy…Much appreceated…:+1:

Hey SD, im not personally a fan of what you do (your end results are what i am talking about not the process of your free art expression) and i don’t want to stir the pot because online arguments are stupid and never end. BUT, i was slightly irritated by something you posted or somebody else posted on your account. and wished to make a point for you (or whoever) to think about.

“This forum is full of robots. Bunch of t pose game model crap. 95% of these threads look exactly the same.”

“Create a perfectly rendered low poly symmetrical character in a nice tidy environment with perfect perspective blah blah blah.”

I just wanted to point out that most of us on this forum wish to work in the game industry some day and if we are creating nicely rendered game models then there is nothing wrong with that and we give each other pointers on how to improve so we can be hire-able one day. Many people are in the habit of giving those pointers to others so we can all become better artists and thus give those tips and crits to you. And i don’t think that it’s you “rocking the boat” that stirs up so much controversy as it is the fact that you don’t seem to be improving in your free expression and you take no advise. While if your goal is to be a child and play with a toy that’s all fine and dandy, but i wouldn’t come back so harshly at people who are truly just trying to help you become a better artist.

Again if that was somebody else posting through your account then this is directed at them and not you lol.

Clintus Maximus…If you don’t care for my works, don’t understand my methods in creating and think that I have not improved, then why do you bother coming back to my thread to sound off your opinions about it and me…Why don’t you go to the sorce of your complaint…The person who posted the words that seem to offend you.
I can’t help or stop what other people post on my thread…What I can do is agree, or disagree with what is posted.
I’ve never said anything bad on anyones thread in this forum…I respect other peoples threads, goals, work, and methods of working and wish that you would show the same courtesy towards me, my works and my thread.
Some people like my works, and others don’t…I can live with that, can you…

Let them ramble SD
Its alright. Enjoy this program, enjoy this process. If art makes you happy then make art. If food made you happy, then cook. If writing makes you happy then write. Life is far too short not to enjoy it.
I’m sorry for any part I played in this controversy on this thread. I can agree with you doing what you do. Now I don’t exactly like everything you put out, but if just making art for arts sake gives you a reason to get up in the morning, then by all means go for it.

Now as for the recent piece:
The cools and warms balance out what could be a very confusing and overwhelming image, however I do believe you need work on this composition. The characters confuse the eye. I’m jumping around. now I understand that theres chaos, but the colors dictate some sort of control. Control my eye SD. Direct me around the scene.
And give me some depth haha. your scenes have a lacking of depth sometimes. a false perspective or a short one. really pull me into the scene. give me something to toy with in the background,
then again that could do with the composition.

That said, its definitely one of your stronger pieces, so far so good.

No no no you misunderstand me SD. I don’t mean to hate on you or your work. Im saying i take a different approach and choose not to work the same way you do. That’s all i meant by “not caring for your work”. I didn’t mean to come across as insulting, so i apologize because i can see how the wording would seem that way.

My initial comment came from the fact that whoever posted that comment was (in the forums view) you. So somebody logged into your account to post the comment or you scooted over and allowed them to post it. My defending of the statement of this forum being full of robots posting the same crap is directed at whoever wrote that. Whether it was you or whoever you let post.

At any rate. I can live with you doing art a different way than i choose to and i want to leave with a mutual understanding that i did not mean to insult you or your work but defend those of us who are working towards being game artists.

Framedworld…Thank You, and also Thank you for the contructive suggestions, I agree with them all the way…:+1: Live and learn

Clintus Maximus…Thank You  I’m here to learn, and to enjoy myself while doing it…All of the negitive words and thoughts just get in the way of that, and nobody benifits.
Everybody brings something different to the table in this forum. A feast of ideas,… and there is plenty of food for everyone. That’s what makes this forum so great…So there is no sense in squabbling over it…Somebody pass the potatoes, and the steak… Just food for thought…
