New Works

APR. 07, 2012
Decided to work on this piece some more…Gave it more of an expressionistic style to try to capture more of the feeling that I was going for with it…An inward reflection.

Ali vs Joe Frazier The First Match

Glenn, beautiful composition and I love your use of black and white. My only minor crit is that the ring doesn’t seem big enough. My suggestion is to turn on perspective and turn off local transformations on the right side of the screen. Then play with the camera angle settings in the draw palette. That’s how I ended up getting that extra depth I needed with Bag End, and I think it might work well for this piece too. Regardless keep up the fantastic work!

Gary (aka voodoodad)

you must be really big fan of Box

HEY Thanks Gary…I’ll have to try that perpective feature that you mentioned out on one of the next pieces that I finish…The small look of the ring doesn’t bother me on this piece…makes the fighters and the fight event seem even bigger…which is what it and they were at that time…bigger than life in reality so to speak…
I have put these finished versions into my CG Talk Portfolio by the way… if you want to see a higher res version of them, check them out in there…Up to #10 in this boxing and boxer series that i’m putting together so far…

Lemontmoon…Couldn’t even tell you who the World Champions are at present,…shows how much times and the world have changed. But I was a big fan when I could tell you who they were…That was before your time unfortunitly, when boxing was still king, and just about everyone on the planet knew who the Champions were…Times and circumstances created those true peoples champions, the likes of which will in all probability never be seen or felt the same way by the people on the planet again…That’s why i’m trying to capture how and what I felt about these champions in visual form…Just a pet project of mine, and a way for me to keep some fond memories alive within myself.

Thank You Michalis

Kokoro…Thank You.:)…I’m trying to go way beyond the photo type snapshots of which there are already millions of out there, in capturing the feelings that i’m after with these action pieces…Hopefully I will have developed a decent technique for achieving that emotional feeling that i’m after in my works by the time i’m finished with this boxing and boxers series that i’m working on…I know i’ll have fun in the process of trying to …That much I do know for sure…

Ring Side

hey hey Glen! that came out great. As I’ve said before you’re nipping at the heels of George Bellows. i think we’re witnessing the birth of a new modality in art - the hybrid sculptor-painter is born.

Its amazing the way you portray dynamic motion in your pieces…I’m allways surprised when I see you portray the same subject in a new way…

Magbhitu…Thank You :).Hey John…it’s in great part to you for sending me the link to the boxing paintings of George Bellows, that some of these pieces that i’m finishing bare a resemblance in style to his boxing paintings…His boxing paintings are great inspirations to study and learn from…So I thank you for turning me on to his Inspirational works…They have given me a great path to follow and explore further than I would have otherwise…Thanks John :+1:small_orange_diamond:)

Thank You Deke…:)…I got the idea to make a bunch of different versions from the same 3D tool and piece in part from the idea Meats Meier puts forth in the illustration section of his DVD Introduction to ZBRUSH 3…He basically said that it’s possible to make a 100 different paintings/illustrations using the same 3D tool using the method that he uses and demontrates in his DVD.
I like his idea and enjoy doing it that way , and with some imagination and alot of work,…it works great… for me anyway…:D:)

Goin Down

Wow, Glenn. These last few pieces are stunning! I’m ashamed to admit I hadn’t been watching your thread very closely the last few days. But let me say that these new boxing pieces are simply stunning works of art! you’ve attained the ability to convey not only motion, but speed and raw bone-jarringly physical impact.lIf I saw a print of the last one hanging in a gallery I would buy it in a heartbeat (if I could afford it :D). Amazing work, Glenn!

Hey Thank You Gary :)…I’m just trying to get rid of that static frozen in time feeling of a photo or sculpture trying to be a painting, and am going for actual expressionistic paintings with a painterly feeling to them, and am doing it by using the sculptures forms as volumes in a space that I’ve created, …I’m after works that capture my own feeling about the subject in the ways that you stated above in your post…Thanks for putting it so nicely into words that express what i’m after in and with my works …:+1:small_orange_diamond:)

Smokin Joe Frazier connects with that mighty left hook of his, and Muhammad Ali begins his decent down to the canvas in their first title bout.
