new uv > old sculpture

I’ve been looking around to try and solve this. and I just cant get my head around this problem

i have zbrush 3.5r and 3ds max 2010

normal mapping

ive built a model in max and exported it over to zbrush as a obj
started sculpturing
realised my uv map sucked so i re did it in max.

how can i move my new uv map over to my old sculpture. or is there any other way around this. my sculpture took ages to do and i aint doing it again. Ive already made my diffuse map in my new uv map.

i’ll never make this mistake again!

Go to lowest subdivision
Store a morph target
Import you obj with the updated UVs
This will overwrite the existing UVs. You’ll get a warning message, accept it.
Swap morph target.

You should now have your old model with new UVs.

if this works richard im going to run around the house singing!

i’ll let you know how i get on.

knew this was too good to be true.

I tried what you said, zbrush does everything that you said. it countsdown to 0.

But zbrush crashes everytime I try to do it.

I’ve restarted zbrush, restarted my PC. It never crashes on me.

any suggestions?

is there any way around this at all?

or is the only way redoing the whole sculpture (no way) or projecting on to the other model. even though the older model is slightly different in geometry.

please some one help me :frowning:

Import the updated model as a subtool, subdivide to match that of the old model, then use Subtool / project all to project the old geometry onto the new model. It may need alittle bit of clean up though.

what richard said is true … but depending on whether or not you hav stored an immediate morth target be4 you started your sculpt, the following steps may be safer for you

CASE 1: did not store morth target be4 start sculpt
Go to lowest subdivision
(((( EXPORT YOUR LOWEST SUB LV MESH AND LAYOUT UV WITH IT ))))))
Import your obj with the updated UVs and replace your lowest sub lv mesh

there you should hav your UV

  1. did store a morth target be4 start sculpt
In this case, you can just go straight back to your pri 3d app and start UVing your last mesh save, and once done export obj
Then in zbrush go to your lowest sub lv, and swith your morth target(this is the morth target your saved right at the beginning) , and simply import and replace that …

there you should hav your UV

the important note behind this is when you re-import and replace , make sure to have the same vertice number and mesh shape … otherwise your higher sub lv sculpt wil all be affected

ok, well thanks guys for the advice. was knowledgeable and interesting.
