New to Zbrush

Hi There!

I’m really new to Zbrush, but with just a few hours of playing around, and watching some tutorials I can see it is quite an easy tool to use!

So I had a bit of a play, and I have noticed that the image I am seeing on my screen seems quite faceted, (as shown in the images below)

The smiley face, seems to almost have a quilted effect on it? It is just the standard tool sphere I was playing around with… (I think like 3 subdivisions) it is almost as if all the edges of the faces are highlighted and its quite distracting. Is this normal? or is there a setting somewhere that sorta smooths the edges so they aren’t quite so prominent?

This second image only has I think 2 subdivision levels on it so obviously it is more faceted but, it takes about 8 subdivision levels for it to look smooth on my screen.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for listening

It’s standard. You can either

  • increase the geometry’s resolution as you have been
  • have BPR smooth them a bit when rendering (Render: Render Properties: Smooth Normals)
  • Turn off Transform: Quick 3D Edit and set your Tool: Display Properties: DSmooth to 1 (maybe bind this to a hotkey so you can toggle it quicker than bpr can render)

].

Thanks heaps for clarifying that! I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right or wrong. I will have to play around with it and see what I can do. I will give those things a go.

Thanks again!
Emms.

As a new user as well I was having this same issue and wondered if it was normal, particularly as the tutorial vids I was following did not seem to show the same level of chunkyness (technical term there  )

It is because tools ( the ones I’ve used at least) don’t add geometry, just change what exists already. Ill be interested to see when I get back on to zbrush later if the Transform option change suggested by Cryrid adds geometry.

cheers

Hi Cryrid, Thanks for that info, I’m just wondering how do I turn off transform? And where do I find the Display properties for my tool?

Thanks!
