New to ZBrush

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am NewMonster.

I have recently acquired a copy of ZBrush for my Mac and have began sculpting a few of my own creatures. So far I am having a blast, though there are some… set backs that I have come across. These are probably easy to solve for a pro-user, but are big and disastrous for one who is new to the program. I shall begin:

1: In my art style, I always begin with the head and work my way down. When I am fully satisfied with the head, I work on the rest of the body. I do this for both drawing and sculpting. Even as we speak I am constructing a creature for a game model which consists only of a head. So is it possible for me to attach a body to my creature later on in the sculpting process? or… is it too late?

2: Every time I save my progress, the computer seems to make an exact copy of my model ON TOP of my model! So sometimes I have two of the same model floating around my space. Is there a way to get rid of that?

3: sometimes ZBrush turns off in the middle of my work flow. This is annoying and sometimes very disheartening. Is there a way to stop the crashes?

If you can answer those, particularly the first one, I will be very happy.

  1. You can attach whatever you want to your models whenever you want. My workflow is very similar to yours. If the head sucks, what is the point of doing the rest of the body? Anyway, depending on how the body and head need to connect (skin to skin or skin to metal/cloth) Depends on how you tackle the attachment of the mesh. If it is to a totally different surface you can just create a subtool and then sculpt on that. If the two meshes need to be combined and actually one then you’ll want to look into how to retopo.

  2. hitting “shift+S” is stamping the mesh onto the canvas (probably what you’re doing) Anyway, hit Ctrl+N (new document) and it will clear out the extra one for you.

  3. That all depends on your settings, how many polygons…a TON of other things.
