New to Zbrush, have a question

I just downloaded the trial version yesterday and have been looking through the tutorial videos.

I’m pretty new to modelling, but since I have a hobby of making computer games, I feel like I want to get better at modelling (finding good and cheap models is the biggest problem of being a hobbyist game developer).

I really like the way you sculpt your models in Zbrush so far, but what I’m wondering is if Zbrush can be used alone as a modelling tool. I’ve gotten the impression that Zbrush is not really used for modelling from beginning to end, but more used as a part of the pipeline where you first use Maya (or similar) to develop a base model that you use Zbrush to add details too (which can be used for normal map for example) and then get it back into Maya to finish it. Is this a correct impression or am I wrong?

I like Zbrush, but I want a modelling tool that I can use from start to finish (modelling, texturing, rigging and animating).

Any thoughts on using Zbrush to make game ready models are welcome!

I live and die in Zbrush. If I can get away with not touching another software, I don’t.

Zbrush is a modeling software…it is a sculpting software…it is a texturing software.

As for animation, rigging, rendering…that is for an animation and rendering package. While you can get great results from Zbrush in regards to rendering, an application that is built for it will do you better in the long run.

I seriously use nothing but Zbrush for modeling and retopo. Photoshop and polypaint in Zbrush for textures, Roadkill and XSI for unwrapping. And XSI for rendering and lighting. (I was a MAX user but saw the light).

The reason a lot of users use Maya or something similar to start with is because that is how they know how to do it. It is part of their workflow and change is hard. They are fast and proficient inside of another 3d app so there is no reason to change. So it really all depends on the how much you enjoy the tools and workflow for any given application.

To sum up, if you’re looking for an all in one modeling application, Zbrush can get you there. If you’re looking for a pipeline, Zbrush can get you there. If you’re looking for animation or rigging, Zbrush CAN’T do that. If you’re looking for an Unwrapper, Zbrush can’t do that. Any part in the creative process Zbrush can handle, and does it at the top of it’s class. When you’re looking for something more technical…well, Zbrush is an artist’s tool…and you’ve seen how artists do in Math class. (I rule at math, but as a general, math and artists don’t get along…incase you didn’t know)
