New From Polypaint Issue

Hi. I’m a pretty new user to ZBrush, and am having a problem bringing an object over from Maya and then polypainting. I just purchased ZBrush 4, but had used 3.12 in the past to polypaint objects from Maya without any problem. What I’m trying to do is:

  • create a NURBS object in Maya (this is for Second Life)
  • convert to polygons in Maya and hit GoZ (was importing .obj in 3.12, but I tried that with 4 and it doesn’t make any difference.)
  • polypaint in ZBrush and then get texture with New from Polypaint.

When I hit New from Polypaint is when I have the issue. The texture created is a jumbled mess. Any ideas how to fix this or what I might be doing wrong? As I said, this workflow was working perfectly in 3.12. I’m attaching some screenshots to illustrate. This is just a test sphere… I’m not really working on a sphere textured with jellybeans… Help would be very much appreciated!

I’m not sure my previous texturing problems are related to yours since you are importing a mesh from Maya, but a number of Second Life sculpty makers (including myself) had similar texturing glitches with the primitives that come native to Zbrush 4.

I did a UV check and “morphed” the uvs in Zbrush and saw what I thought might be some sort of overlap so I played around with the UV’s in Modo. I eventually determined that centering the UVs on the UV space and then reducing them to 99.3 percent (or thereabouts) fixed the problem. I’m not experienced enough to know really what’s happening here in Zbrush, but that fixed the texturing problem. Maybe something similar will help in your situation.

Here’s a link to the original thread where this was discussed. Please also note that Marcus Civis very thoughtfully provided a plugin to correct the UV’s for the primitives. It works great!!

Hi Nancyan. Thanks for responding. I had seen the previous threads about the other Second Life issue and the plugin. I’ve downloaded the plugin and polypainting works great when I use it on ZBrush tools with the zsculpty plugin. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do anything to help with the objects that come over from Maya. I did think the two issues might be related too and have looked at the UVs. Unfortunately, since I’ve always worked with NURBS, my knowledge of UVs is very limited. The only difference I could really see are the triangles at the borders of the Maya UVs, but I haven’t figured out yet if there is a way to change that.
