New documents and resolution?

Hi all,

Im a professional graphic designer and recently bought Zbrush. Due to the fact I have no money for online courses i’ve started teaching myself this wicked program. I’ve just been doing tutorials trying to get a handle on things and seem to be slowly progressing. One thing I’m still having trouble grasping is resolution and the polygons, my 3D experience is really limited.

I noticed when i’m doing these tutorials, the tutor zooms in and he still has nice smooth edges on his model. When I do the same thing, my edges get quite rough. I know this program works a bit differently to max and maya.

So my question is, is this to do with my document resolution or is there anti-alias settings I need to change, or is it to do with my polygons and subdivisions?

What document size do you advanced users use when modelling the type of highly-detailed models I see on the top row. Thats the level I’d like to get to eventually. I’ve basically just been leaving it at default new document settings which is clearly quite low. Is there an optimum res for detailed work? is there a resolution setting I shouldn’t go higher than?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, cheers!

You’re confusing zooming the document with scaling the model. Zooming the document is just like zooming in with Photoshop. It scales the pixols larger, which pixelates the image. Scaling the model is independent of document zoom. It enlarges the model on the canvas, making it seem like you zoomed in on a specific part of it.

Look at the controls on the right Shelf. The top set of controls deal with the document. The lower controls only become available when a model is in Edit mode, and deal with model – including the scale feature.
