New Computer, Issues?

New kid in the family, haven’t installed Zbrush ( working on license);
HP 9426f
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600
8gb ram
ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card
Windows Vista 64 bit.

First Vista Computer.
Machine primarily bought because of 8gb ram.
Cannot wait to see implications of subdividing!!
This familiar to anyone?
Any issues to be expected?
Sound of one hand clapping?

You will like it. If you worked with XP before you will not notice to much difference. It’s asking a bit more while installing software, but that’s not to bad.
I’m alright with my Vista64 and am surprised why people make such a big fuzz about it. It’s booting quicker than my old old xp installation, and app’s run at least as fast as on my older comparable XP rig. Only thing I changed was the graphic orgy settings to ‘performance’ after getting bored with the hard to read translucent hyper modern crap, and I installed the firewall from :http://www.comodo.com/. Not that I distrust the Windows firewall, but I love to see which apps call home without me knowing it. With the comodo firewall I can limit the apps which are allowed to talk to the internet. Haven’t found a windows setting for that yet ;). And it’s for free… Oh, I only installedthe firewall, no virus or other bs.

Best of luck and show us some cool stuff you made with it.

Lemo

PS:You will LOVE the memory. You can divide your sphere to at least 10 Mio!

Oh… before I forget it… Of course… copying files and other things are like a quarter of the speed you are used to… ALOW!

“L” so far, so good. Pixologic appears to be busy, understandably,
considering the season, and I emailed the day after Christmas:( so I downloaded the demo.
Couple of subd’s and I am looking in the millions.
However, crap with 1 million poly’s is still crap;)

Because of a little bit of financial luck (did not invest with Madoff)
picked up a few more toys.

  1. Headus uv
  2. Upgraded Carrara to 7 Pro
  3. Donation to eon ( Vue Complete)
  4. Paid for the Maya guys IRA.
  5. DAZ sent me a Christmas card. (V4 is starting her IRA.)
  6. All the books from here arrived in a two week period. Plus the manuals,
    plus the tutorials.
  7. Lucky this stuff did not come in boxes, as it is, the recycle
guys are giving me the evil eye.
  8. New Photoshop

Winter will be busy

Only problem so far is Vue and finding out on my computer I have two identities; me and the administrator.
I paid for the computer, but the administrator owns it.
By and large the trade off for the 8gb was not a bad deal.
Stay away from Vue 7 for awhile.

Fingers crossed.
Thank you and Happy New Year if I miss you.

“Stay away from Vue 7 for awhile.”
I had a fit after figuring that out with 5, then I bought into it with 6 Infinite and XCrap as stuff usually becomes better, and decided to really pass on 7 and 8 and 9 and… In the meantime there is not a single thing I cannot do with the instancing in C4D/Vray/Renderman…

Headus UV is mega cool! Good choice. Maya… urgss… sorry… furball… cough cough…

Good luck with the new STUFF!

I have to go along with lem on the Vista thing… I don’t see why people gripe about it so much. I’ve only 2Gig on my machine, but it works like a dream. Never had in a crash in 18 months of Vista, and I like the performance just fine. Zbrush handles very well on Vista 32, haven’t had any need for more than that.

Copying a larger amount of data can cause one to boil a bit as the explorer seems to be dead slow copying stuff. 36GB took EONS. Same amount of data on my Linux or OSX boxes is squeezed through the pipes in no time by comparison. However, I had no crashes either.

A present to all those who read this and are having problems
with Vista 64, zbrush,etc.
Had a computer technician come to my house to help me
with security and network issues for four computers.
Vista would not play nice with the other kids regarding network
file sharing. He left after a few hours ( and a few bucks) without
solving the network problem.
I could not install certain programs.
In zbrush I could not use Zapplink ( explanation generally is to run the program as administrator right click the .exe )
Now trolling the net sometimes a waste, sometimes gold.
Also have found when you have a problem, good chance someone else
has same problem.
Came up with this solution to every problem I had.
If you are thinking of going to Vista Home Edition 64 bit.
KEEP THIS!!!

EDIT: I thought that when I bought and paid for a computer it was mine.
Did not know that I shared it with an administrator.
One thing I want to know.
WHERE IS HIS HALF OF THE MONEY???
