Never seen before Mesh Explosion

Okay I am having this problem with the sculpt I am currently working on. I made the base mesh in maya to proportions (5 feet 10 inches) and then exported the mesh to zbrush for sculpting. I am done with the sculpt now but strangely when I imported the mesh to maya, it was wayyyyyyyyy bigger than what the original was. So I scaled it back down without moving any vertices or what so ever which cause mesh explosion. After having scaled to the proper scale, I exported the model and imported into zbrush on the sculpt at the lowest subdiv. The model imports without an errors but when I go up my subdivs, the mesh just explodes. I don’t understand why would this happen. I have scaled models before without any problems. I really wish someone can help me out with this issue at the earliest due to deadlines which I don’t want to miss.

I need the scaling to be done because the model with the displacement map in maya, even with mental ray approximation applied, seems to be unsmooth in the render. I guess the reason why it seems unsmooth is because of the scale and even if not, I need to get the model properly scaled to match the pipeline’s requirements.

Here are few screen shots:

First attempt at this and the mesh exploded completely

I have used both GOZ and the normal import/export technique but still nothing.

The explosion is caused because of a point order change. I’ve no idea why that should have happened. For the second, I understand that changing the scale a lot at the lowest subdivision level can affect the detail at the highest level.

I suggest you go back to your original ZBrush model and set the Tool>Export>Scale slider to a suitable value. That way your ZBrush model remains the same in ZBrush and it will be scaled appropriately in Maya.

Thanks a ton Marcus for the reply. I shall try it out and get back to you. Anyways do you know the model was scaled up so much in zbrush? I never scaled it up. The scale in the export options is 460 which is wayyyyyyyyy too much. And I know about the point change order but never knew even scaling affects that.

Thank you so much Marcus. It worked like a charm. You my savior for the day :D. But can you please tell me why was the model scaled up so much in Zbrush so that I can take care of it in the future if there are any settings to be done in Zbrush before importing.

I’m glad that worked. For the scaling issue it is possible that the Tool>Export>Scale slider value had got changed somehow in between export and import. This can cause the scale to change when you re-import. For example, if you set the slider to 10 and export an OBJ, then set the slider to 1 and re-import the same OBJ the scale will go up by 10. If you leave the setting at 10 then the model doesn’t change in ZBrush. So basically you need to make sure the Tool>Export>Scale slider value remains the same.
