negative mesh

Hi

I would appreciate any and all links to tutorials on inserting negative meshes.

in one of the intro videos for the latest version of zbrush, they artist is creating a large creatures with dynamesh, at one point he duplicates the mesh and uses it to cut a hole in a wing… thats what I want to do, it can clearly be done… but I just cant get it to work.

specifically I wish to duplicate an existing mesh and use it to cut a shape of itself in another mesh so the two can intersect but remain separate.

thanks

There’ s a very good new Video about exactly that Topic in the new ZBrush-Classroom-Video-Tutorials.

really? thought I had watched all of those. do you know which it was? I cant watch them all today… Thanks

ok… Ive been through the videos. but none of those methods are helping.

heres the senario. I have 2 subtool. both dynamesh.

I want one to cut the other. so I take the cutting peice, I duplicate it using the move/transpose line by holding ctrl alt, but all I get is a duplicate, no white negative mesh…

so what am I doing wrong?

I have also tried starting with one mesh then inserting via the insert command and holding alt, that dosent do it either.

I cant do it by modifying a insert brush, I wouldnt be able to get the cutting piece in exactly the right place or scale.

This won’t work across subtools; you need to either merge the subtools or use the mesh with the InsertMesh brush. For the merge method, this may be useful:
