Need some hard surface transferring advice

I have recently begun sculpting my first solid piece of armor and would like to transfer the normal map to maya, but when I export my normal map to my maya model, the various areas I have sculpted and shaped seem to have slightly deformed to a point where my hard rigid lines have turned a little wavy. (like a straight lip around my breastplate’s collar that looks very well polished suddenly looks banged up when exported to maya.) is there a way around this, or is there a tutorial anyone knows of that may help with this issue?
