Need Help! ZBrush crashes when subdividing.

Hey,

I just installed ZBrush 3.5 R3, and im running on Windows 7. Im currently going through the create a vase tutorial on the website, and when I subdivde the vase at around 500,000 polys ZBrush stops responding and freezes.

Im running on a fairly decent PC with 4GB Ram, so I dont think its a performance issue. Plus, I can handle alot more polys than that with 3DS Max and Mudbox.

I was just wondering if anyone has any idea as why it keeps crashing.

Cheers.

I suspect that your model is still a primitive. In order to subdivide such models you should convert to a polymesh.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. The model has been converted to a polymesh, still havent got a clue what is causing it to crash. Any more thoughts would be great.

Thanks.

Have you installed any plugins or startup content other than what’s included with R3? Is it only this model that you’re unable to divide beyond 500K?

Hey,

I restarted my PC and tried again, I was able to subdivide it to 7 million polys. But after this I got a message saying to increase the MaxPolyPerMesh count. So I increased that and subdivided again, but got an error saying I ran out of ram.

With 4GB Ram, would 7 million polys be around the maximum amount of subdivisions I will be able to work with?

Thanks again for the reply.

Subdividing 7 million polys would result in 28 million. Very few computers are going to handle that successfully. Why not use HD sculpting instead?
