Need help texturing please

So I’ve got a model that’s pretty much finished sculpting, and I wanted to color on some textures, but I’m having trouble understanding the workflow.

What are the steps I need to add texture with Zbrush?
Also, even though only RGB is selected, not MRGB, it still adds material when I try to paint… this seems incorrect on the program’s part, but I’m sure there’s some button hidden I need to press to paint without changing the object.

I had a really good run with zbrush initially, but all these little things really ruin my enthusiasm, I just need to better understand the bizarre workflow.

Oh, I’ve watched the tutorial videos (will re-watch some, too) but rarely are the nuances covered, and if there’s a program with nuances, it’s Zbrush

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi eraserhead,

If you want to paint a texture you should first create a good uv map. in the tool pallete press uv map choose a size 1024, 2048 and a format auv works fine in most cases. go to projection master and paint your texture.

you can also use poly painting and create a texture out of it later.

if your model changes while painting it has nothing to do with the mrgb. mrgb only paints the material in he material pallet on the object. Zadd or zsub must be of when yo only want to paint a color map.

play around with the rgb intensity and use of different alphas and strokes while painting

hope this helps

Thanks for the response.
I figured out the zsub shortly after posting, I knew that was just some little button I missed…
As for the UV map, I see under tool/texture the “enable UV” option, but nothing else is particularly clear, and I don’t see anything about UV map. I must be in the wrong menu or something.
Sorry, this is probably elementary. I’m going to dig through the tutorials and see if I can’t find anything. If you have any links that could help, that would be appreciated too!
Tough doing this at work, constant interruptions…

Ah, now I see my problem- I’ve stuck with 3.1 so I can use all the plugins, and everything I’ve read is for 3.5 setup.

Will it cause any problems to paint a texture and such in 3.5 and then load the “tool” (what an odd way to classify a model…) in 3.1?

Why the heck have an update the official plugins don’t work for- and now I see version 4 being teased? It’s great that it’s a free update, but makes learning the damned thing a bit convoluted.

Ok, hopefully with 3.5 I’ll have less trouble…

This is getting silly, I can’t find a single answer to this… Having a lag of hours before a question is actually posted to my thread is not helping either…

Here’s what I want to do- I have a 3d model in Zbrush (3.1 and 3.5) I want to take that model, paint with materials and such, adding bone details, scales, etc. I want to then rotate the model, and continue painting.

When using Projection Master, and just selecting textures, I can get through on the lowest subdivision, but that’s pretty worthless for painting any details.
Also, trying to select any materials changes the entire model to that material, although seemingly at random it actually lets me “paint” with the material.

But even if I manage that, I have no clue how to get back to Edit Mode so I can rotate the model and continue painting.

I saw some video tutorial where the guy simply selected a color and started painting, and that showed up as a texture map on the left. I can’t seem to find it right now, but I think even that didn’t work, like it skipped some step to get to the drawing portion, so I can’t recreate that setup.

This is incredibly frustrating, as so far zbrush was very intuitive, but the moment I want to do anything other than sculpt it goes downhill. All the options change, and I can’t find my way back…
thanks for any help! I desperately need it.
