In everyone here’s experience, does it work better to make a characters neck seperate to the head, or part of the same 3d shape?

And, does anybody know how to make godd string? I know it sounds obvious, but nothing I’ve done looks quite right. Im thinking of string with very little slack, but still string, not a pole.

I usually keep the neck part of the head. When I start modeling a head, I first get the basic shape of the head and neck in at the same time.
About making string, have you tried Rope Maker?
There are many methods for string, like bending a twisted cube.
I model the head and neck together since it is easier to blend into the body…
As far as string goes, this may sound strange, but one of my most useful tools, and one of the first custom tools I did was a cylinder tool, reduced to X=3, Y=3…This gives you a ‘Dowel’ that is easy to form, bend, inflate, whatever…Add a quick mask, you have bamboo…Skew it and you have a spoon with a little tweaking…If you try to bend a cylinder, you get folds and difficulty in forming…This tool avoids that…
Here’s my ‘Dowelling’ for you to play with, and if you email me, I can do you a tutorial showing some of the things it can do…
I know you can make a new one every time, but this has proved useful enough as a starting point, that it’s the only tool I’ve added to my default ZTools folder…
Wait a second, you can add a tool to your default tool folder? cool. That would save me a ton of time. Can I do it with the demo version of Z? Alright then, I think I know what I’ve been doing wrong with my heads. Ive been just haveing a cylinder for the neck. That’s why my wizard’s neck looked like crap. Thanks StoneCutter, and you Muvio.
