Narrowing down ZBrush issues, can someone try to make an MMI out of this subtool?

Hi guys,

I’ve been having a tremendous amount of ZBrush issues and I’m getting closer to narrowing the source down before I submit a ticket to Pixologic and I was wondering if someone can do me a huge favor and download the subtool I link to and simply try and make a multimesh insert brush with it (PLEASE save your work first).

Here is a link to the tool: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1s4205qoagrvky1/BricksComplete.ZTL

Its about 2.12 gigs so its a larger tool. You would simply need to drag it onto the canvas and go to Brush -> Create Insert Multimesh and wait for it to finish.

Tate Mossessian did this exact technique in his bricks tutorial but when I try I get a crash which I can replicate on two Mac’s each with fresh images and fresh installs of ZBrush. It seems that ZBrush runs into an issue and cannot write more than about 4.5 gigs to the temp folder (regardless of operation, MMI, qRemesh, Subtool Master, etc) before it crashes with an “out of space error”.

If anyone could try this for me on their machine I would hugely appreciate it. I’m trying to do as much troubleshooting as I can before handing it over to the Pixo guys.

What! a ztool that’s 2.12 gb? Could you post an image of this ztool please. I’m really curious why it is that big.

That sounded big to me too since when I split it in half its only around 350MB per half.

I currently don’t have ZBrush active on this machine but as soon as I do I’ll post a pic. The tool is 40 subtools that are bricks, each brick is poly-painted and about 650,000 polys. Its the same amount Tate uses in his environment tutorial in the ZClassroom but his doesn’t crash

EDIT: Here’s the picture

Also it should be noted that I can crash it with as little as a 350mb tool. It seems to be that if ZBrush writes above 4.5 gigs to the temp folder it crashes with an “Out of Space” error.

Tate Mossessian’s completed wall, even with all the small stones added is 9.4 million total poly’s and he has something like 56 bricks. Your 40 bricks are coming in at 26 million total poly’s.

Thats the weird part. I think he does something to reduce the count but doesn’t mention it. I haven’t gone through the whole tut but up to the point I was at he never decimated bricks or anything. Another forum user PM’d me and asked me if I knew how he got his polycount so low because they have the same brick polycount as I do.

The ‘IMM Bricks’ brush that is in the brush palette is Tate’s bricks and they come in at around 67,000 poly’s per brick.

He has to be changing something somewhere then and not mentioning it  Here’s a screen shot from video 2. Thats the polycount from the brick he is working on in the beginning. He does something because around the 13:00 mark when he loads his premade bricks his polycount is much much lower.

Its not just the MMI brush though that causes ZBrush to crash for me. Its anything that makes the temp folder write over 4.5 gigs. qRemesher, and Subtool Master do it too

Thank you so much for all your help by the way  Pixo should definitely hire you!

Yes, he must have lowered the amount of subdivision levels before he made it an IMM brush. He also doesn’t mention how he managed to retain the texture on the bricks after he made the IMM brush.

 That would be nice. I’ve been out of work for quite a while. I could use a job.
