My zspheres look strange! Can anyone help please? (answered)

Hey forum,

Im brand spanking new to zbrush, just have to let people know that. Im coming from a Cinema 4D background and one of my new years resolution was to learn how to sculpt organic models. C4D is very much a motion graphics software and I want to learn something new.

Its taken me some time to get the hang of the controls in Zbrush but now that I have the basics down Im trying some tutorials but things keep going wrong for me and Im hoping someone can spare a moment to help me out.

Im following this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPyaz0A0Nx4&feature=plcp and after 41 seconds into the clip my mesh doesnt look the same as the tutors. I follow every step but when I hit the A key the first zsphere that I have created is not rounded but pointed! Its very strange. So after some time I figure out what could be going wrong. Under the Adaptive Skin tab there is a button called “Use Classic Skinning” and when I turn that on my mesh resembles the tutorial much better but then there seems to be another problem!

Later into the tutorial the tutor suggests adding more zspheres to the arms, chest and shoulders to “tighten the mesh” as he puts it but this really messes up my mesh. Its hard to describe but its like the new zspheres I create force the mesh outwards and create strange looking edges. If I add a zsphere to the wrist and press the A key its like the mesh now has a sleeve!

My apologies if Im describing things awfully bad! Like I said, Im very new to zbrush so please forgive me for not using the correct terms.

Cheers,
Pauly

That tutorial was made using ZBrush 3.1. ZBrush has evolved and changed considerably since that tutorial was first introduced. I would suggest that you try to find more up to date tutorials. At least ZBrush 4 and later.

Cheers mate, I was looking through some older zbrush tutorials and Im surprised how much zbrush has moved on. I think you’re right, that could be the problem. I had a look at that tutorial again and managed to get the settings the tutor was using. Under “Classic Skinning” he had Mc turned on, dont know what it means but has helped.

Its difficult to find basic zbrush tutorials for zbrush 4. Maybe I made a mistake buying the software

Thanks again.

Here are some basic ZBrush 4 tutorials that should keep you busy for a while. These are a good resource if you are just starting out in ZBrush or have been using it for a while.

Maybe its difficult to find free tutorials but there are a bunch of good valuable publications to buy.

I would recommend:

Thats all you need for a good start with Zbrush.
