TLDR - My very first full Character sculpt with separated costume elements (2nd attempt of actual ZBrush modeling - the first one I made was a bust model of an orc)
It took me almost 3 months to get this character finished, so what did I do as a beginner?
Here we go LONG post ahead!
Crits are MOST WELCOME
first, I started getting tutorials from FlippedNormals
- mainly the “introduction to Zbrush” and started to learn the interface and the plugins and how polygons behave inside Zbrush (as I have no initial knowledge of any modeling program)
then after learning how to move inside Zbrush (because that’s the hardest thing for me - to maneuver my self inside Zbrush as the effin UI is a mess and a lot of it doesn’t make sense to me EX- saving my file- holey crap bro you save the tool, not the document - totally doesn’t make sense as they can say save as PACKAGE? to save all subtools and documents? anyway…yeah that’s the hardest thing for me, took me a couple of weeks before this character project probably took me 3 weeks of tinkering what the tools do and what I need to do (as I have some prior knowledge to traditional sculpting and i work as a concept artist/painter for quite a long time in the industry and i want to upgrade my set of skills and add 3d modeling and sculpting to it).
and then after i have what i need i made a custom UI on where all the things i need is right on my UI so i can work faster and more efficient - on that moment i started to actual modeling the orc face - you can see that on my Facebook page and or my Instagram page (@art_of_hnbunda)
then after i managed to finish the orc i started to map my direction on how will i accomplish the character idea i have SO:
my workflow would probably be very simple - i know the basics of ZBrush now i need a way to render things - so probably i will try to learn keyshot as my plans for the hair part of my character will be fiber mesh for starters ( but in the future, i will learn how to make hair cards) so keyshot it is because it has a bridge in zbrush and i can take fibermesh instantly
so next step for me is to learn kyshot - learn the UI it was quite an easy part UI design is very intuitive though there are some quirks its ok - then learn how to light a scene properly and learn how HDRI works and also how to use the material graph to mix my zbrush textures to the materials inside keyshot.
then after i got that knowledge i started on the actual modeling of the character project at first i followed tutorials from Nikolay Naydenov
but every time i started working on the character there are things i need to learn to achieve the things i want - so every step i was researching how to achieve the things i want - I mean i can probably ask someone but i don’t want to spoon-feed myself - that’s why i researched it on my own as from my experience learning things from my own make my brain remember things more effectively rather than being spoon feed
so halfway through the tutorials, i changed the character to suit the character idea i had on my mind and diverged from the tutorials and started to research more things to achieve the looks i wanted - i also researched how to decimate retopologize things so i can move them properly / and also how to bake things in substance painter to make a lower poly 3d (im preparing for my next character yeas ) and i also started to learn substance painter so i can introduce it to my workflow and probably learn maya as well - on a side note i found a way how to make hair cards inside zbrush - i would probably implement int on my next character project
so it took me almost 3 months of sculpting and researching and loads of trial and error and loads of workflow trials and test if my idea would work…
and then i thought i would never finish this project but i soldiered on and eventually with hard work and consistency plus time - this is what i managed
