My Sketchbook

Hey guys! I need some help and criticism on a character I’m making. Im modeling facial expressions for this spike-hair girl, and I need her expression to be as natural and adorable as possible, but I don’t think I’m getting it right- it just seems awkward… any suggestions would be great! These are a few of the expressions I’ve tried out, but its still not there… Spike1.jpg

Good expressions

The biggest thing that pops out to me is a sense of tension that makes the smile feel less genuine. Specifically in the corners of the mouth, her lips look very thin and tight. Also, the creases that go from the top of the nostrils to the corner of the mouth need attention. Right now yours stop far to soon. Finally the sides of the nose often lift a bit and bottom teeth are often less apparent in a smile. Remember that it’s a lifting motion. To expose lower teeth requires a contrasting motion. Of the three, your middle is the most successful. Expressions are something that you need to go back to reference again and again. I’ve linked an image from Getty Images, but make sure to use many examples to give you a better feel for what you’re trying to do. Good luck, interesting character idea.

after a long break from zbrush, I decided to have some fun. Whats more fun than a monkey? The eyes are placeholders and the hair is photoshopped, so feel cheated if you must.

Also: can’t wait 'til ZBrush 3.5 for Mac!!!

THE hair is so realistic, could you tell me what software or plugin you use?

Hey Guys!!! been a while. Just got ZBrush 4 for MAC!!! Its amazing. I decided to attempt a project I’ve long neglected: Giger’s Alien. Here is an early WIP. I hope to make the entire body soon- but I’ll jump in head first:

I really like the render of the alien. Any chance you could reveal what shader you used and any render settings? Nice start!

It’s just the “bone” material with “best” render. havent gotten too elaborate yet

sweet thats real nice on the alien. its really a solid start!

That’s lookin really well, you can also experiment with best render’s transparency to get that “dome” that goes over the snake spine in the original

Here’s another one: thought I’d explore some color and compositing options for funz.

Here’s the ZSpheres. I love them so much! Another SUPER powerful tool from Pixologic

More testing on the head. Tried to emulate the “AVP” poster real quick.

Delightful job!

Love it! The alien is also still on my to do in zbrush wishlist haha. The shader also looks very nice on it.

I made this guy in ZBrush for the Sprint “Epic” competition.

I’d love to see this with a BPR render to get rid of the jaggies and really make the shadows look great!

Here’s Some shots of the torso.
