My first ZBrush Dinosaur!

Hello all. I’m a sort of new user, so I thought I might post my first serious model. The dinosaur is Augustia, a crazy ‘rebbachisaur?’ from South America.
The spines along the back need some fixing, there is some scary geometry in there! I’m dying to texture and color it now!

Awesome Theodoric! :+1:

Excellent, high end work. 50.

That is fantastic! I’ve been working on some dinosaurs as well. I work in Cinema 4D and do all my texturing in BodyPaint.

Did you do the entire model in ZB or did you import a base mesh and export the displacement?

Wow! David Krentz! I just noticed your sig on the pic. I have some of your models and read of your work on Dinosaur.

Been a big fan of your work. Glad to see you in the digital world…

Wow and then some ! Would love to see a little bit of your wip’s of this beast.

Thanks for the replies! I modelled the who thing in ZBrush, and did not flatten it at all. The texture is modelled.
I first created a totally different sauropod that Paul Sereno (the paleontologist) found. He has not yet described it formally, and he didn’t want me to circulate any images of it until the paper is released. So…I turned it into another dino by adjusting the proportions. The first dino did not have any spines, so I went back to level 1 of the mesh and did some edge loops to his back. Then I wrenched out all those spines from very little geometry, which is why they are a little bit nasty. I tried to add them in Maya from the level 1 mesh but ZBrush didn’t remember to other subd levels. I’m sure theres some little button I need to push.
I must say, as a guy whose been in animation for 12 years, this is by far the most ‘artist friendly’ program I’ve ever used! Earlier this year I was complaining to a modeler friend of mine that so many 3D programs are intimidating and I just don’t have the time to really get comfortable with them. He told me to try ZBrush. I’m hooked now. I sculpt in clay, so this is like virtual clay! I love It!
I’d love to figure out how to add a displacement map to this model. There is so much to learn! Yikes!

Ahhh cool a new dino to learn about in some distant future! Hopefully sooner than later!

some hints on your learning disp…a search on that subject will yield a wealth of info…narrow it down by adding the second app you prefer…eg maya. also watch the zscripts in the help section.

a good rule of thumb would be to…either after importing a mesh or creating an adaptive skin from zsphere model is to save it as an obj file then store a morph target and save it as a ztl. then do what you will with it. but now you have the base mesh to bring back for calculating those displacements or normal maps.

look forward to seeing some more of your zb work!

I’ve also been modeling Dinos- just for fun. I am making them out of single meshes, and about 3 million polys. I cannot subdeivide again after that because the limit seems to be 10 mil. polys. The texture detail on your Dino is so good- I was wondering how many polys it has, and if it is a single mesh?

Thanksm and great work!

The dino is a single mesh built from Zspheres. Its about 1.6 million polys.
I used a bunch of edge loops on the areas where I needed more detail.
The detail is all sculpted in using texture master.
Really its a pretty straitforward model!
I just need to find the time to finish the damn thing!

I’ll be looking for your dinos on the post.

heyho… looks fine… go on!!!

Hi …Really great dino work there…:+1: .Can’t wait for the texture work… I know how you feel, i have it the same way… texture, texture, texture, make it real and alive  … And yes Zb is a really great way to form things, It’s like you say clay in the hands, and Wham, down on the canvas ,and it’s a drawing… looking foreward to see this dinobaby:) with textures… and colors… gretz Andy

great modeling both here and on your web site, sorry to here about the fire
any plans to make dino sculptures via zbrush and 3d printers:+1:
hope you dont mind me putting your address here http://www.krentzpresentz.com/
