my first attempt....giger alien

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and i am quite new to zbrush, too. I was modelling in max for 5 years now, and suddently found zbrush on the web…
After a little time of user-face experiencing, i really started to like it…have so damn many question about it and i am a little afraid of asking to heavy noob questions…
here is my first attempt to work with zbrush…it`s not perfect and not well shaped, but was funny for beginning.
Regards,
Thomas

if you like it, here is a little test animation i made in max7 using normal maps on a low-poly geometry : Animation1,2mb

cool model! What part of it is zbrush?

I would love to see the cage on this boy it that is possible.

if ya used z2 and used if for displacement maps etc…could ya give us fellow zbrushers a few hints on how you worked em with Max?

Thanks!

Such a great model, Thomaskl!!! :+1: I’ll download the animation later tonight once I got home  Now I want to see the model textured. Please post when you are done.

I think this board is one of the best community out there. Seems so friendly for noob like me as well  So I think you can shoot questions when you are stuck on something…someone will answer in a very short time ! :sunglasses:

Thanks for the nice words…
As i started to model the alien i was doing this in max7 using standard Poly-Editing Features…I didnt even know about the existence of zbrush…
So, this here is the rough undivided wireframe i modelled in max6:
wire_alien_.jpg
Lateron, i found zbrush, so all the aditional detail is coming from Zbrush…I used this basemodel for the normal map i generated out of the zbrush geometry…so, i can now animate this 18k poly model quite easily in max…and it looks quite nice in rendering…
I will post some WIP`s later on, when i got the time to work on: I have a wip folder on my site, where i post all the daily junk-wip images…So, feel free to take a look.
Ahem…could someone perhaps help me with a little question ? (nooby-style)
What is the Brush-Alpha good for, when sculpting objects ? or is it only for Pixol-Working ?Thanks and regards,
Thomas

PS: here is a little welcome present:
As i am in Photography, too, here is a little collection of insect makros, you can use as a good refrence when sculpting creatures.

This galery is updated often, (there wont be so many insects in winter, so for the next few month, there wont be a lot…:frowning: )…

Look forward to your tutorials.

Not to be cryptic but the answer the question…

it’s in the details.

check out the practical guide for some great info on how zbrush works from zspheres and posibility to box modelling and texturing, displacements etc…if ya haven’t already that is.

Ok now I have to hate you…hahaha. I love macro photography.

am curious what kinda camera you use…and of course what lenses…and of course what kinda film you prefer.

Just picked up a Elan and some lenses…all have macro abilities so am looking forward to among other things some interesting bug life of my own…any tips…appreciated.

hehe, Makro-Stuff roXX

I am using a Nikon D70 with the Tamron 180/3,5 Di Lens…In Connection with a nice little SB800 Flashlight this really works great for small details…
Before i was using the Coolpix 4500 which had great makro-Functions, too. But you had to go to near to the animal to get the size, you needed. And you took all the light…
But at least the D70 really roXX…

hahaha I had many internal debates about going with nikon’s d70 or the canon elan 7ne. After reading about 75 testimonials…which pretty much came out 40-35 in favor of the Elan…I decided to stick with my old faithful Canon. I had and old Ae-1 which was…hell probably still is one of the best cameras ever made. I still have mine but after 25 years…it needs some work and I am tooo attached to let just any old dork work on it. And I couldn’t justify paying 600 bucks just for the tools to fix it when I could by a new camera for that.

Anyways glad to make your acquaintance and may we make Mr. Vlad74 very happy with our photo references of bugs!!

Yeah, now we could start a Pro/Contra Battle about Nikon and Canon and all the other goodies around that…but not here  Lets just share nice works :-) But i know, what youre talking about…read so many reviews for month before spending so much money on that D70 Bitch…Who is Mr…Vlad74 ?
Glad to make your acquaintance, too  Looking forward for nice bugs and models, too
Regards,
Thomas

mr vlad74 is the author and creator of the mantispa thread. plus a few other bugs he has chosen to share with us. As I type this his final pic is in the very top left of the bottom row. And I am sure…soon to be top row as I think his earlier unfinished version made it there.

Yeah…we could have a down and out brawl I reckon! hahahaha But once I figure out all the fancy settings ( hey my last slr was 25 years old…and I loved the total control I had…these new fangled computer driven models…while the elan allows total control…it requires a college degree to remember everything it does and how to set it to do that hahahahahaa) …once I get a handle on it…I would prefer to put my lens where my mouth is and it would be fun to challenge one another to bigger and better things. But like art photography is in the eye of the beholder and the shooter!

Too bad winter is on it’s way here now…or else!! hahahahaha

Kewl alien so far…I always enjoy seeign a new take on a classic…

Loved the bug gallery too…the spider in the top left, I don’t know what type that is, but I have them here 3 inches or more with legs outstretched by the hundreds I was guess. Massive webs…last winter was so mild that the spider and bug population in general was horrible…

You said with winter coming on…etc, …You should do like me, and bottle your creepers…I have what is assumed at the moment to be a brown recluse spider. He is about the size of a half dollar with legs outstretched (all 7 of them. Lost one while battling me). Caught him crawling out from under my bed the other night while tidying up my room.

My point to this is they make great pets till they die. Great reference and inpirational pieces. Plus they make hellacious conversation pieces. I normally have several black widows jarred up here, but my wife destroyed my last two captives.      :-1: :-1: :-1:

Well sorry about my yacking…but you all were having such a kewl conversation and thought I would drop my two cents in. Have a good one and I look forward to an update on your Alien.:+1: :+1: :+1: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
