Mutant Boy; Fabricio Torres

Hello, first post in here, thanks Labelle for the invitation.

This model was done for a modeling session based on Schell Studios sculptures.

I modeled a quick “3D sketch” in zbrush as a reference for the poly modeling in XSI and then used it to paint textures for the final model. I’m not using displacement maps right now, but I hope to be able to use them asap.

The original piece from Jordu Schell:

My version of it (rendered in XSI):

Wires of the poly model:

The zbrush reference I used (2 hours in zb):

I know that the skin is not perfect (as it is a simulated SSS) but I’m trying to improve it since I’m not a shader guy :D.

Hope you like it.

Fabricio this is NICE!! Good sculpting and texturing. Keep posting!! :+1: :+1:

Brazilian modellers seem to be very fond of Jordu Schell

Good looking model …Fabricio :sunglasses:

I saw it before on CGT.com but I feel it 'd be better to post my comment here

I really really lóve ( :sunglasses: :o ) this work! It look so damn nice modelled, and also so damn nice photoreal shaded! :o  All texturing is AWESOME and éspecially the right-hand-sided stuff is top-shaded! The SSS works really great in this artwork! [I don’t see why you call the shading 'not perfect  :o ]

Could you tell me a bit about how you got is so damn nice & realistic (I mean especially the shading). I’m participating the Master & Servant-challenge, and am trying to make a believable shaded face… [ http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=229249 ].
I’m trying to also put SSS in it, but it seems there’s no simple way to do that in Max… So if you could explain a bit about the SSS-fake-theory that you used to create that fake-SSS in XSI, I’d be veeeery happy…

And another question: did you render it in passes? Or retouched it in Photoshop or so?

Good luck & Thanks for the time  & Have a nice day! ‘Once’ this will be CGT.com frontpage material, I’m sure!

Anymore Dutch??

Well they say Boozy looks Dutch…!?

Pilou

never sleep close to a camp fire. great work.

Amazing! Best 3D teeth I’ve ever seen. Top row :+1:

Bas Mazur:
Thanks! I’ll try to make more and more use of zbrush in my stuff, so yes, I’ll keep posting

Jantim:
Hey, I’m that Fabricio mentioned by Antropus

Dutchman:
I said that it was not perfet just because it’s a fake SSS. A real SS would make some areas like the nose and also the ear to look even better, but I was too lazy to went into a real SSS
What I used for the shader? let me see. I mounted a 3 level shader. A oren nayar for the color map, a cook torrance for the specular and a gradient locked to the light position for the SSS. Basicaly I setup the gradient to be more redish where the lights enter from a 180º angle.
I also rendered it in passes so as to control the reds in Photoshop.
Yes, I used Photoshop. As I didn’t like the lips and the eyes, I retouched them. They are photos. I also painted more veins in the eyes.
Thanks a lot for asking. good luck with your master and servant scene.

Frenchy Pilou, abraXas, Moochie:
Thanks a lot!

Hey Fabricio, you and antropus are marvellous. Impressive modelling. Hope to see more works.

Amazing texturing Fabricio…It really inspires me to learn to texture properly…
I love those teeth especially, but I think the deformity nearest the mouth could do with a little more wetness to make it look softer.

Fabricio, welcome look forward to seeing many more fine posts. :+1:

There’s a sadness and feeling of vulnerability*to this study.

… think there are two ways to perceive this.
One is the quality of the craft, the art of constructing.
And, there this is top notch. No doubt about that. I’d be a happy user, if I could acchieve half of the shown abilities in any amount of time.

The other side: it is a very personal, private view, so it might not mean anything to anyone, but well - this is revolting.
Quite possible that such horrible things are really existing - but then illustrations like that should be limited to books for the clinical staff.
Talking about esthetics and what to tell minors, seeing this. There are more then this pic that fall in this category, and surely no visitor is forced to look at those (something I always postulated: “… if you do not like it - don’t look at it!”).
Ok, but there got to be a cause for these pics (other then documenting the ability to construct at high level of craftmanship). So, if there is an answer to this, Fabricio, maybe you have the time to spare??

Again, great craftmanship, awesome “meshing” - do not get this wrong, please!

SS, SSS??? Whatsthat?

plagio :-1:¿TOP ROW…???

Why is this picture top-row and “Mystic” from Sebcesoir NOT??? Very, very strange :-1:

ilusiondigital:
Thanks a lot, I’ll keep posting more an more works, I promisse.

Patrickb:
That a commom critique in every forum I posted this, seems like everybody wants more specular in the tumour area, because of the stretched skin. I’ll work on that, thanks for comment.

boozy floozie:
Thanks for the welcome. You pointed my feelings on this image, I tried to make his eyes (at least the “normal” one) to transmit this sadness. I’m happy that you could feel this too. Thanks.

Zaphod:
1 - thanks a lot for the compliments, really aprcciated, but please, do not ever say “I can’t do this”, I used to do it, and now I see that talent means nothing if you don’t study hard. That’s why I’m always studying, so as to improve, so do the same, and I’m sure you’ll be able to do whatever you want in any time you want. Just keep loving waht you’re doing.
2 - Well, I see that way: I’m a 3D modeler, so I’ll have to be able to model everything, from a monster with a disturbing look to a beautiful playboy model. So I don’t see any problems looking at any type of art at all, since it’s well done, I don’t mind. My friend Alex Oliver always scupts disturbing pieces that makes me sick sometimes, but then I look to it again and see the beautiful of the forms, the volumes and all. As an artist or a modeler, or whatever we are, I can’t be impressed by anything, because if I do I’ll be limitating myself to a world of illusion where everything is beautiful. Sometimes life is worst than any art you can possible imagine, just (as you pointed) look at any medical book nad you’ll see things htat you would ever imagined exists.

Bas Mazur:
SSS = Subsurface Scattering
Isn’t it said this way in english? Here in Brazil we call this effect by SSS, it’s easier

jotajota:
I said that I copied Jordu at the very first post of this thread. I do wrote on the image “based on a schell studio scuplture”. So everyone knows it’s a plagio,
Being a 3d modeler you MUST be a plagiarist too, unless you model only your own stuff and do not work for anyone. If you’re in a studio you’ll have to copy a sculpture or a concept from another person of the creative department. Or you think you’ll be able to model whatever you like? I’m only showing modeling and texture habilities in here, not taking credit for the idea of the model or the design. I’m sorry I was not clear enough about this.

Abyssis:
“This”?? I assume you didn’t like my work… Thanks anyway for posting.

Thanks for the plug, I’m very happy that this study is going that far. Zbrush definitely speed modeling process, not only by the use of displacement maps, but also as a quick way to make a “sketch of ideas” in 3D media, so I’m doing 3 times more works than I used to, I hope to make a better material to show you asap

Cheers,
-Fabricio

Fabricio, sorry 4 “this”, I like your work, but: It was not the goal in my notice :sunglasses: You are welcome…

p_e_a_c_e

If you go back a few pages, you would see that Sebecior’s Mystic was on the top page. And it wasn’t even in it’s finished state…

Chill.

Looks like Jordu’s latest class just started this last weekend.

http://schellstudio.com/news.htm

I think he would dig your work Fabricio.
Looks like he’s open to setting up workshops in other countries too, maybe if you get enough people together you could set something up?
