Multiple UV tiles

I am having a number of problems with a texturing project. First, a summary of the assignment:

It is a very detailed 3d scan of a very complicated model. This means there is a ton of geometry and there are a lot of Ngons. This obj need a photoreal texture. With so much messed up geo and no UV map this is a problem. What I need to do is set ip at least 2 UV tiles at 8k each.

Problem: When I edit the “H repeat” value in the UV map menu to “2” and click “PUV tiles” it seems to make 2 8k UV tiles- but zbrush maps geometry over the seams of the 2 tiles and makes all kinds of artifacting in the texture. When I poly paint on the same model and press “new from polypaint”, the uv is made but its very fragmented and in the wrong place. Is there good info on multiple UV tiles out there or am I going about this the wrong way?

the screenshot is a sphere that I uv’d with 2 tiles and then textured it with a grid. The screenshot is what happens when I apply the texture to the UV.
