multiple subtools and displacement mapping??

hello all,

I havent yet worked with any displacement maps so forgive me if this sounds stupid. My idea is to import a low res mesh made in Maya, and then split it into separate subtools for higher poly counts on each. Seams wont be an issue as the seams will be hidden.

My question then is this: Is it possible to create a single displacement map form the multiple tools that I can then map to the original low res mesh in Maya???

Any advice is greatly appreciated! thanks a lot.

As far as I know when you generate a disp map it overrides the previous, or creates a new one. In Zmapper you can use one texture to map all your objects to, I don’t believe this is possible with disp maps though.

So you’ll need to comp them all together in another application.

UV your model before you split it. After splitting and before subdividing you should also store a morph target for each Subtool. When you later return to level 1, switch to the stored morph target and create your displacement map. When done with all your maps, use another app like Photoshop to combine them.

If using Photoshop, make sure that automatic color adjustments is turned off, or you’ll find that your map’s values shift on import.

Daaang, Im confused. Ill try to pick that apart aurick and goast, sheesh. Thanks for the response guys. Thanks for the links aurick.

Cheers,
