Multi-object into single-object for disp-gen

Hej everyone,

I am going to do a lot of modeling for architectural stuff. Building a castle and stuff related to it.

So i try to use a specific example, i think its easier to understand that way.

My desired workflow will start in Modo. There I will modeling a wall for example.
That wall will have several meshes to build that wall. Think of it like 100 Bricks will build a wall. Than I block that wall out with a single mesh like a container.

Now … I have a very high detailed Wall that is build like in reality with hundreds of singe bricks. Now I want to project the details of the high Detailed Wall onto a very very basic “caged” wall. Of course the Caged Wall will have to have enough polygons to contain the sides of the brick wall.

When the Information from the original single Brick-wall are converted to the Caged “Illusionism” Optimized Brick-wall converted, I can actually use it for generating Displacement and normal maps and can render it in a decent speed.

Does someone have a suggestion in doing such a task?
Any suggestion is very appreciated.

Actually I have one workflow by my self using Projection Master:
Opening both walls. The Original and the Caged Brick-Wall
Dropping the caged wall down with projection master
in Projection Master drop the original onto the canvas
Picking up the caged again and hope it worked as desired.

The problem with this is that it can be very complicated, because of hight. Sometimes it is very hard to determine in 2d how high or low I have to place the original onto the caged. And I have to do this for every one of all the sides the object has and that can be a lot in case of a whole town.

I think there is a other better solution for this.

Instead, why don’t you do an orthographic render of the high poly wall in modo to get your details, then load that render (now a texture image) into Zbrush along with the “container” mesh, then use an ortho view in Projection Master and paint the image onto your container using depth and color to transfer your details? That’s how I would do it in ZBrush. Actually, I would probably just bake the details from the high poly to low poly in modo, but that’s just me.

Hello Patrick,

Thanks for your suggestions.

Well the Projectionmaster Methode could work in most cases but that is also a process that involves many steps. For a few Walls that might be okay but in my case that would take very long as I have latterly thousands of those objects.

The last sentence sounds interesting. I know some besic baking from Maya. But there it needed some setup, took long to calculate and the result was mostly not as desired.

Are the Baking solutions better in Modo?

Project All

I figured out, that the function under subtools is exactly what I searched for.
It’s called Project all. It tries to match the outlines of two or more objects.

I have tested it a bit, but it seams that it does not work that well. I do have set the Blur to a 8 or 16 but still there are some areas thar are not projected at all. I will upload an image tomorrow.

Does someone know a good description, tutorial or workflow using the Project all function?
