Old school movie monster quick render. Zbrush+Cycles.
Trying to create a light responsive clay material.
Nice material - I’ll check it out. Thank you for sharing.
As for your sculpts here, they are really interesting. You have unique style and I really like it.

ZBrush sculpt, Cycles render.
she turned out great. likeness is good. area between eyelid and eyebrow is too flat though… how long did you take? … thanks for sharing the link, i watched the video too, it is amazing, quite different approach than i know. …how did you like it?
Thanks @kokoro, glad you like it. I really do struggle with the eyes and still require a lot of practice, but I like to think I’m improving little by little, I tend to get lost in the details. I just followed along with the video on a second monitor so I’d say between 3 and 5 hours. I really enjoyed it, I might actually follow along again with actual clay, so I don’t have to deal with those pesky polygons.
Is that a matcap on the Tall Cranium Guy? It looks more like clay than any I’ve used. If it is a Matcap, where did you find it?
Thanks for posting your great work!
@Germinate It’s a custom standard material so you can adjust the light direction .
This includes the material “liveclay red” and 2 brushes, one called claycarver which is a modified claytubes with a custom alpha
and claytrim which is basically a trim dynamic with the same custom alpha…
edit: I might have the wrong alpha on the brushes, so here is the right one just in case.
Thanks Mosley!
Finally, brushes that act like real-world rake tools!!! I’m a traditional sculptor new to Zbrush, and I haven’t used brushes that acted like the real tools I’m used to, until now. I think these will be in my regular rotation now. Was the alpha the only adjustment you made to these?
I put the material into the Startup>Materials folder, but it shows up as Matcap2, and looks nothing like it should. If I press load material from the palette, it works. It shows up shinier than your renderings look though.
Thank you for these. FYI clayTrim had the right alpha, but ClayCarver did not, so I’m glad you posted that too.
I can’t wait to really dig in with these!
@germinate
I’ve been trying to emulate the “clay experience” for a while now. It’s fun to experiment with.
I think the changes I made to the brushes were alpha, stroke and imbed.
I’ve also had the “matcap 2” issue, it’s like a corrupted matcap file or something. I don’t think it’s from my material though.
I’ve put it in ZStartup>materials and it shows up under standard materials as liveclay red.
The uploaded pics are just viewport screenshots, this material doesn’t render very well in BPR, don’t know why, so it’s mostly just for sculpting.
If you’re having problems, feel free to upload a screenshot, maybe I can troubleshoot it.
Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to play with these brushes. Love your stuff!
