Morphing a Sphere into a Cube.

Ok, here’s what I need to do. I need to start with a simple polymesh sphere, fairly low-rez, and push it into a cube with slightly rounded edges. I can’t just start with a cube for this, it has to start as a sphere (for technical reasons I won’t get into here).

I’ve tried messing with the deformers, but I can’t quite seem to get what I want. I can flatten a side or two, but I’m not managing to get the nice clean slightly rounded cube shape I want.

What would be the best and easiest way to go about this? Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

use the trasform tools with masking

Hmm…I guess I need a bit more specifics than that, or a pointer to someplace that might show this technique.

Use the “REconstruct Subdiv” button until the polysphere becomes a cube, delete the upper subd-levels.

cool idea, but that changes the polygon count. Can’t do that for this job, has to be the original sphere I started with, just changed to be cube-shaped.

Seems like this should be easy, but I haven’t figured out how, yet.

Create a cube that has the shape you want. One way to do this would be by converting a cube to a polymesh and dividing it. Then append your sphere to the cube as a SubTool. With the sphere selected, set Tool>Dist to 1 and PA Blur to 16. Now click ProjectAll.

Those are the settings I just used to transform the polysphere that comes with ZBrush into a shape that matches a subdivided Cube3D. You may need to fiddle with the settings a bit depending on your models, but keep PA Blur to a multiple of 8.
