Morph

Hey guys,

Figured the organic comp at a local forum was a good opportunity to get back into organic modelling as it’s been a couple of years. Two birds with one stone really, as I can finally get started on doing my take on my avatar, Morph from the X-Men, while at the same time, learning to use Zbrush 3!

So the basic gist is Morph will be sitting on a chair, blinged-out, looking pretty bad-ass with a hoody over his head, hands either resting over the arms of the chair with a cigar in one or have the fingers meeting each other just under his eyeline. Concept is flexible right now but I need that something to pop my website so this piece is going all the way!

First up is the ref:

This is the progress after about 5 hours:

Advice is much appreciated.

It is hard to work from comics, as you don’t really have consistent reference to work from. Every artist interprets the character differently. I’d say they all feature a wider mouth, nose bridge (well, that place where the nose should be), and chin. There is just generally a greater mass to his face than what you have here. Besides those small tweaks, I’d say it’s pretty solid.

Edit: Also, here’s a little mock-up of the changes I’d make for your convenience:

I had a little bit of a smile when I saw your paintover. Had me wanting to re-evaluate how far I push him. Definitely made the changes to the bridge of the nose but I’ll hold off on the kooky grin (for now). Will post an update once I get some time to finish his jacket. I can’t wait to “make look good”

Yeah, I kind of gave him a silly grin, but the thing I was trying to get across was the wideness of the mouth, not the expression. I think that would be beneficial, though every artist does use their own style.
