Did anyone try this tip:
http://pp.tc/tip_4gb_limitBreak.htm
???
It should work, especially if you have much more than 4gb ram available.
With my 8gb I’m still not sure if it’s worth trying (I’m using other applications at the same time). But with 16gb…

sounds interesting considering we don’t know when 3.5 is going to be released, i’d try but i’m too lazy
looking at this some more, it doesn’t really up the normal zbrush ram limit but does create a ramdisk of the wonderful compacting memory nightmare folder, so it would probably be a boost to avoid that, i would suspect once zbrush reaches its internal ram limit it will use the ramdisk. seems neat.
alright i’m trying a trial version of a ramdisk program but i cannot seem to get the junction to work correctly to where vmem is on the ramdisk temp folder, any clues?
From now Zbrush only can manage 4gb. It’s not prepared for 64bits yet.
If you wanna use all your memory, and you’re using Win32, you should go to Properties of My Computer>Advanced>Boot&Recover>Configuration>Boot&Recover>Edit boot.ini
In section Operative Systems, at line that ends with “/fastdetect” add " /3GB".
Launch Zbrush, go to Preferences>Memory, Set the Maximum memory to 2.800Mb and if you want, the compacting memory to 1000Mb.
Zbruhs should now work still 3Gb.
Win32 can manage 4gb, 2 for you, and 2 for kernel), that leaves any software works with 2gb as maximum.
This way thing left: 3gb for you, 1 for kernel, and now you can use 3gbs per process.
thanks but thats not really what we’re covering here. btw i have 8gb on 64bit xp.
the point is to avoid the harddisk writing (which is slow) when zbrush hits its ram limit by using the ramdisk and junction to write the vmem to the extra ram that zbrush won’t recognize.

Well, it appears it’s no possible neither use more than 4gigs nor avoid compacting memory function. Hopefully it could choose the time for compacting memory when you leave untouched Zbrush. Five seconds are really little bit.
Hope you get pull this wall, but it appears to be really difficult.
ZBrush compacts memory when it NEEDS to. Your suggestion is sort of like chugging a 32-ounce soda and then being forced to wait for a bio break.
@ aurick, simple question can the vmem folder be changed to somewhere else using junction?

No. I’m afraid you’re wrong… or someone lied in the documentation.
Zbrush compacts memory if you leave untouched during 5 seconds or change to another application. You can read this in your signature ;)

In the Picker Subpalette section
I caught you! :D
.
Thank for help us Aurick!.
aurick lets just ignore this nonsense and let me know if the junction is possible okay? thanks as always.
I’m sorry spaceboy412.
Have you the Win2K Resource Kit yet?
Perhaps you can try in linux first (Zbrush works great, except you can’t do the online activation), so you only have 30 days to try it.
Do a soflink in linux is easy as “sudo ln -s /usr/autodesk /autodesk”, linking ghost directory /autodesk to /usr/autodesk. (This case is needed for installing Maya in Ubuntu).
Good luck.
