modeling,texturing practice (old man head)

here is a little modeling and texturing practice…comments are welcome.

Jorge L.,

Sweet head sculpt, be nice to see this one finished!! As its a very well done piece, the only feedback I can give is… due to the fact he is a old man could have a bit bigger skin pore/marks in certain places particularly the nose. The bottom two images with how the lighting is hitting the face makes the nose appear really pristine, however, that could be just because 1 the image is kinda small and two the lighting intensity is hiding the pore quality. Take this with a big grain of salt cause your model is very very good!! I’d give it 4-5 stars but will hold off until its further along, I’m sure it’ll be a 5 star image! :+1: :+1:

hello, oh thanx for the comments, i see what u mean, the second set of images are Max renders, i think i need to learn more about exporting from zbrush to 3d max …so i can improve the quality on the mesh details.
i will continue practice to achieve better results inside 3d max…thanx again

Hi man, good work…!

Me too i’m learning somethingh about Zbrush workflow ,head texture…
here you can see my progress, let me know if you need some info.

what render are you use? mental Ray

Bye
Leo

hello marciani, thanx man, yeah im using mental ray, im following the settings that i found here: http://www.zbrush.info/docs/index.php/ZBrush_to_3ds_Max#Mental_Ray_Setup_for_Rendering

nothing fancy, just using mentalray omni ligths and some final gathering, but im having some trouble with the normal map …it doesnt display well. looks great in alone, but when i render, it looks crapy…hehe

well heres a new image that shows some of the progress i did.

just in case someone was wondering lol  Tony.jpg

What happened in between the red material and the gray sculpture (last image of the top row and first image of the second row)? Did you have to retopologize it to create the mouth hole and eye sockets?

Great sculpt and texture btw. I think the final render could use a bump map, or normal map. Your details from zbrush don’t appear on the render, except throught the color map.

hello there, oh yes i moved the red one into max to retopologize, then back to zbrush to serious sculpt.

about the detail loss, i continue trying different paths over the normal map, when i create one directly in zbrush it looks odd whe rendered in max… so i can only use it at 45% strenght instead 100%…
100% make harsh edges and weird stuff , even when in ps looks perfect.

Did you create the entire texture in Zbrush? You did an awesome job! =)

very nice work. I like espacially the ear. in the second progress picture the ear area don’t have many polygons. how did you manage this? how many polygons have the head?

Stormi: well i had amazing ref pictures and i used a mix of techniques…first i used skin patches to get a solid base with differnt skin color variations , after that i used zaplink to put the real usable picture zones (straight from the ref ) into my textures and did a lot of retouching. but subtle, u know tweaks here and there.

Cral: oh yeah i exported the red mesh into max…there created a new topo that fits exactly to that…and re exported to zbrush for serious sculpting

You could try displacement and bump mapping in addition or replacement of normal maps.

Try the setting i’ve uploaded.

  1. Put in C:\Programmi\Pixologic\ZBrush3\ZData\ZPlugs\ZMapperData\ZMapperCustomConfigurations
  2. open zmapper and load the file “3dsmax8modifiedE”
  3. projection\ create projected normal map
  4. go in max
  5. in mental ray under bump load the image like normal map
  6. in the image section the rollout “output” enable rgb and clamp the value 1, -1 (drag the line in vertical or write the number in the field)
  7. play with the slider bump

P.S Have you got someproblem in mental ray with the memory?
Could you share your material and light setup?
Thx
