Modeling in Zbrush, everything? (newbie question)

Is it really true that I need a separate modeling software to build the
base mesh, or can I do all aspects of modeling in Zbrush?

I’d sure rather do that ,because Zbrush has quite good instruction.
I’ve already got a book and DVD.

Thanks for your thoughts, I tried to do a forum search but got
an error message.

Thanks from a total newbie…

You can make a basemesh in zbrush. You can start with just a basic cube or sphere, or for more complex shapes use zspheres.
See some of the tutorials in the zclassroom.http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/
You can also use the retopology tools to refine your basemesh to suit your desired topology.

you can do pretty much everything in zbrush. some people with prior 3d knowledge in other software like maya or max (i am one of these people) prefer to make basemeshes in those programs because it is quicker for them. i also feel like i can pick up the basics better by having a solid basemesh before i sculpt. for example, i can use zspheres but it is just faster for me at this point to model it in maya. but if you dont know those programs, it would prob just be good to learn it in zbrush!

That is great! I really need a software with solid instruction,
I was just holding off on learning zbrush because everybody
says to model in a modeling program and finish it in zbrush.

Oh, this will really help. Thank you!

You can do everything in Zbrush, but you would get the best results partnering Zbrush with a traditional 3d modeling app that you are also familiar with, to support ZB in some situations. There are free or inexpensive programs that work fine for this purpose.

Ok…how about learning how to model with zbrush, then applying that
to a regular modeling software? Seems to me this would be a better way to learn, because I prefer books, and the manuals for Silo and Hexagon are
both pretty much just a description of functions.

I need both a description of functions and instructions on how to model.

seems to me it would be a good learning plan.
