Model is nearly unworkable, please help!

I have sculpted a pair of sharks and am having a huge amount of trouble with the models. They are both right around 1.6 million points with multiple subdivision levels. The problem that I am having is that I really can’t do anything with them now that I have merged the subtools (teeth and eyes) using dynamesh. Even at the lowest subdivision level if I try to sculpt or mask, regardless of the tool, the model is incredibly slow to respond, usually leaving a trail of brush sized dots as opposed to a clean line. I have tried exporting the models and reopening them but the issue persists.

I have tried searching but can’t find a similar thread. Anyone know what I might have done or how to fix this?

Thank you!

I just tried freezing the subdivision levels and it helped but not much. Also I am getting boxes surrounding the areas that I am working on, for example trying to use the standard brush the tool leaves square boxes with the stroke that only goes away if i rotate the model.

The issue also affects polypaint and it demonstrates the issue nicely, see attached image.

Make sure you haven’t inadvertently activated Dynamic Subdivision on a high poly mesh. Tool> Geometry> Dynamic Subdivision (make sure it’s off).

Spyndel that was it, thank you so much!!! Phew, what a relief!

Just had the same problem and this thread saved us-- thanks!
